Looking for Player Housing inspiration? Here are some of our favorite sources for inspo for builds, or just great community resources

The World of Warcraft community has been all about Player Housing for the last few months. You got swept up in the housing enthusiasm, and then the closer it got, you started asking yourself — what should you actually do with your house?

In any form of creativity, the hardest thing is the blank page. Whether it be writing a story, drawing an original character, designing a room. A blank space is filled with the possibilities and knowing where to start or having the confidence to place the first object can be paralyzing. While PTR and beta come with the knowledge that it could be wiped at any time and won’t transfer over to live — which can be freeing, as you can try things with no consequence — some people have found retail seems much more weighty to get started.

Seeing some of the things created by other people can feel intimidating. But it’s important to remember, you most likely aren’t seeing their first attempt. The first step to being good at something is to try it and be terrible, but to learn from that and try again. The entire design of the housing system is built on trying something then resetting it to try something different.

The community has come together and put together some great resources to inspire and support each other and to challenge each other to improve.

If you are looking for somewhere to ask questions and to share tips and tricks you’ve worked out for yourself — some places to try are:

Warcraft-centric Inspiration and How-Tos

A number of WoW streamers have started posting streams of tours of their own or other people’s builds, giving you a curated view of some of the more interesting ideas out there. Then there are streamers who have started posting guides on how to build specific elements of a house design. Searching on “WoW Housing” or “Warcraft Housing” on YouTube will present you with a dizzying number of tips, trick, and tours to give you a bunch of ideas. These are some of the ones that have caught my eye.

  • If you haven’t chosen your housing plot yet, we have a few suggestions on the best housing plots (sort of).
  • SoulSoBreezy housing playlist — Soul is a relatively well-known Warcraft streamer who has jumped into housing with both feet and a bunch of infectious enthusiasm. He has also recorded a number of tours of other people’s houses and explores some of the design choices they have made in how they have built their homes.
  • Pank — Pank started posting during the PTR touring some of the best houses that he found, and has continued to do so on both beta and now retail.
  • Persephonae — posting mostly her own builds, but some great tutorials as well. The speed builds are great for showing what you can achieve in a short period of time.
  • Ellyonart Gaming — a broad ranging gaming streamer, who has posted a bunch of great Warcraft housing videos over recent months.
  • The Drowsy Dragon — has only recently started posting housing content, but has a wry eye for some of the more offbeat options.
  • Autumn’s Ambience — she doesn’t yet have a big back catalogue of Warcraft material, but her housing videos have been on point thus far.
  • Meggoart — the WOWKEA founder, some general housing strategies, and specific tutorials.
  • Cottage Wizard — some great tutorials on how to create some great housing tricks, specific techniques and overall strategies for housing design.
  • Building Mouse — I don’t know where the mouse gets their ideas from, but some of their builds have been incredibly mind-bending. Their kit-bashing skills have been remarkable and inspired me to try looking at different uses for items in my inventory.
  • Excelso — this streamer approaches Warcraft housing with grand plans, and explains how to replicate their amazing builds.
  • WoW Housing — not a big back catalogue yet, but some unbelievable builds.
  • SkullieWullie WoW — this streamer has a deep catalogue of collection guides, their recent content has been heavily housing based.
  • Mehet — some general guides on how to use the WoW Housing tools and how to create specific room types.
  • Lironah — our very own Joan Albright has been sharing some creative uses of far too many rocks.
  • DiscordianKitty — more of an opinion and news site, but has posted a great how-to for floating houses.

General decor assets and design theory resources

Less about in game guides and inspiration images, more about external tools, these resources can help you take advantage of the items in game:

  • MMO Champion have continued to expand the tools and back end data for their housing.wowdb site.
  • Wowhead have put together their own mini-site for all things housing related.
  • Cottage Wizard has put together some great analysis of the ‘rules’ of the different racial architectural themes.
  • Ardastar and Leiyan from the Architects of Azeroth discord have put together this great resource to see how housing dyes look on different materials.
  • HousingGeek has started building out a library explaining how the various tools work in game to help you take advantage of the systems to their best effect.

Other places to look for inspo include more mainstream sources

While there are masses of great Warcraft resources to look to for inspiration, don’t limit yourself to just looking around the hamlets and cityscapes of Azeroth, you can find inspiration anywhere is you care to look. I have seen players post mood boards from Pinterest, try and replicate real world locations, or entirely fantastical creations from other works of fiction. The world is your oyster, and speaking of oysters, I’m sure someone out there has tried to recreate the Birth of Venus somewhere in game.
