You can farm lumber for Player Housing while mounted in Midnight… after farming a bunch of lumber

If you’ve been frustrated by the slow pace of gathering lumber in The War Within in order to craft player housing decor with your professions, then good news — new achievements have been added to the Midnight beta that allow for mounted lumberjacking.

Druids have the advantage of Flight Form not breaking when they gather lumber. Every other class needs to hop back on their chosen steed after every single golden axe click, with all those extra casts adding up to rather inefficient gathering sessions. Players have been asking and hoping for the ability to chop trees from gryphonback (or dragonback, or felbatback) for some time, and it seemed almost inevitable given that gathering professions such as Herbalism and Mining have allowed mounted gathering for several expansions.

The latest beta build has indeed given players the chance to unlock mounted lumberjacking. Each of the 12 expansions of World of Warcraft has its own dedicated achievement for gathering 250 lumber from its zones. For example, once you harvest 250 Dragonpine Lumber, you’ll earn Draconic Lumberjack which unlocks mounted lumber harvesting in all Dragonflight areas. You’ll still need to hop off of your mount in order to chop down trees in other expansion’s zones until you collect 250 of those types of lumber as well.

To me, 250 seems like a number that straddles the line between fair and steep. On one hand, you might be able to complete one of these achievements with just an hour or two of focused gathering if you’re efficient and organized (like, say, if you use our handy guide on harvesting lumber). On the other hand, you’ll need to gather 3,000 chunks of wood to ensure that you’ll never have to hop off of your ride while lumberjacking anywhere on Azeroth.

If you’ve already been harvesting lumber ’til the ramoliths come home, you will likely still have quite a bit more work ahead of you. It appears these achievements won’t be retroactive, meaning that you will start from zero and need to gather 250 more lumber from each region once Midnight launches. We’ll keep an eye on these achievements and let you know if anything changes before they go live.
