The Last Titan will send us to a fully updated Northrend

We’re still one whole World of Warcraft expansion away from The Last Titan, but we have now learned that we won’t just be taking a quick trip to Ulduar for the return of the Pantheon — we’ll be exploring a fully updated and modernized continent of Northrend.

With 21 years of storytelling across the world of Azeroth (and beyond), it makes sense that part of Blizzard’s approach is to tell new stories in familiar places. Midnight’s revisit to Quel’thalas is a smaller example. We’ll be returning to a previously explored zone to find out how the land, the places, and the people have changed since our last visit.

Wrath of the Lich King holds a sacred spot in many WoW veteran’s hearts, so a graphically updated Northrend done properly could be a huge win for the development team. Because the release of The Last Titan is so far in the future, we have precious few details about our return to the icy top of the world. For now all we can do is speculate on what the 13th chapter of World of Warcraft will entail.

One thing is fairly certain: we won’t be using Dalaran as our home base this time around. There are several other locations that could serve as a neutral hub for the conclusion of the Worldsoul Saga. Has the Argent Tournament packed up and moved on, or could it be expanded to a city-sized fortification? Would the heroes of Azeroth risk the maddening whispers of its Saronite foundation to refurbish Icecrown Citadel into a functional gathering place?

The short summary of The Last Titan that we got at BlizzCon 2023 described a vast conspiracy stretching back through the history of Azeroth and our efforts to uncover it. It makes sense that we would revisit some of the Pantheon’s works such as Sholazar Basin and the Vault of Archavon in order to learn the truth about our order-happy overlords.

The dragons of Azeroth have been largely absent from the story of The War Within, but I doubt we’d be returning to Dragonblight and Wyrmrest Temple without running into a few familiar draconic faces. Their newly-acquired powers, bestowed by the planet herself, are sure to come in handy as we strive to learn the true nature of Azeroth.

So are you excited for a return to the frozen north? Which characters and zones are you excited to revisit?
