The six coolest housing decor items to craft with all of the lumber you’re collecting during the prepatch event
While you’re zipping about the Twilight Highlands hunting for rares and completing World Quests for the Midnight pre-patch event, why not spend some time gathering lumber in order to craft decor to add to your Player Housing home’s aesthetic?
Even with the increased spawn time between rare mobs, there’s still plenty of down time to fill by gathering Cataclysm’s Ashwood Lumber. Pop over to a node before and after each time you head to a new rare spawn, and your bags will soon be overflowing with enough planks of wood to craft some expansion-appropriate adornments.
So far, the Cataclysm profession housing decor quite heavily favors the Gilnean architectural style. If you love Worgen, woodworking, and a smoky atmosphere, then the catalog is right up your alley. Here are my six favorite decor items craftable with Ashwood Lumber.

Gilnean Map (Inscription) — This one is perfect for your war room, classy library, or conspiracy theory yarn board. You’ll only need eight lumber to be able to pin this slightly frayed and yellowed map to your wall or desk.
Gilnean Problem Solver (Engineering) — You’ll need to gather a hefty 40 lumber, but what problem can’t be solved with a good old-fashioned beheading? Whether you’re looking to set up a museum wing that showcases violent technology, put together a fantastic Hallow’s End display, or just send a veiled threat your neighbor, there’s almost no situation that isn’t improved by the presence of a guillotine.
Gilnean Cauldron (Alchemy) — For a reasonable 30 lumber you can add this comically large pot to your home, complete with merrily crackling fire and steam. It works equally well in your alchemy work room or large-scale food prep area.

Gilnean Postbox (Inscription) — My favorite mailbox decor item in game is undoubtedly this one. It manages to be both fancy and simple, and even comes with a tiny lock so your Rogue neighbors are slightly inconvenienced when rifling through your letters. Gather up 35 lumber, and don’t forget that all post box decor is now fully functional when placed in your home or yard.
Gilnean Rocking Chair (Inscription) — 25 lumber is a bit steep for a rather plain sitting spot, but what could be better than returning to your front porch after a long fight with void-infused horrors from beyond in order to spend the evening in an honest-to-goodness rocking chair? I’m sure the lack of a rocking animation is an oversight that the housing team will reconcile any moment now.
Twilight Fire Canister (Enchanting) — Oh, hey! Something in the Cataclysm profession-crafted housing decor catalog that isn’t Gilnean! In addition to a few other items inspired by the Twilight Cult (or Hammer, or Blade, or whatever they’ve renamed themselves this week), this floating, rotating light source is definitely worth the 20 lumber it requires to craft.
You have until Midnight’s official release date, March 2, to collect all of the rewards you need from the pre-patch event. There is no time limit on collecting lumber and crafting old decor other than a burning need to fill out the catalog of past expansions in anticipation of the avalanche of decor we’ll need to collect in Midnight.
