Hogger is the newest pet in Hearthstone, and he brings a Varian Mythic Skin with him — raising the total cost from $158 to $200
Last time we talked about Hearthstone pets, they cost $158, which we thought was egregiously high. Well, “good” news, everyone: this time, the extremely predatory Darkmoon Faire roulette brings not one, but two top tier rewards in the new Hogger pet and the Varian Mythic Skin. Double the top tier rewards… double the top tier costs!
You can read the full details on our previous post, but the gist of the Darkmoon Faire roulette is that it’s a gacha-style roulette with several possible prizes, and your first roll is free. But the chances of getting the top-tier item — or in this case, items — on that single free roll are microscopically low (around 0.1%), and they increase by absolutely measly amounts with each new roll. At the same time, each roll costs proportionally more than the previous. By the time you’ve already purchased nine rolls and there are only two prizes left, you’d think your chances to get the pet would be at around 50%, right? Wrong: they’re still at a diabolical 6.67%.
So the only way to guarantee you’ll get the top two prizes is to purchase all ten rolls, to get every prize on the roulette. Since each of those top tier rewards has the same low odds and Runestone cost as all the previous top rewards, the total Runestone cost to guarantee you’ll get all ten rewards has been increased to 20,000 this time — which equates to $200. Isn’t that fantastic!?
We thought paying $158 to guarantee you’ll get each of the previous pets or Mythic skins was too much. We thought “surely there’s no way this already super predatory gacha system can get even worse.”
We thought wrong. Somehow, the Hearthstone monetization team looked at their numbers and realized they could re-calibrate their system to suck even more money out of people willing to pay those egregious prices.
The only silver lining in all this is that the exact prices and odds are now disclosed within the Darkmoon Faire Treasures screen itself, if you click the “i” icon at the bottom right. Which makes this whole ordeal more transparent, at least.
Meanwhile, the vast majority of us still don’t have a single pet in our collections. This is still a very exclusive club, and it looks like that isn’t about to change anytime soon.
