The decks you need to win Hearthstone’s Cataclysm Pre-Release Tavern Brawl

A new Hearthstone expansion looms in the horizon: Cataclysm is launching on March 17, and as is tradition, we’re getting a pre-release Tavern Brawl where we can open packs in advance and test out those new cards.

That’s right: if you’re not familiar, during these pre-release tavern brawls, players are allowed to open any packs they’ve already obtained (from bundles, events, drops, etc) and open them to use those cards in this Brawl only. Note that you can’t actually purchase individual Cataclysm packs yourself yet; you can only use those that were granted to you.

So let’s take a look at the Cataclysm pre-release Tavern Brawl: Cataclysmic Brawliseum. Here are some of the decks you’ll want to use to succeed in this Brawl!

Tavern Brawl basics

  • Name: Cataclysmic Brawliseum!
  • Description: Build a deck using valid cards from your collection, including cards from the upcoming expansion, and earn more new cards!
  • Fun level: ?/10
  • Difficulty: ?/10 (varies as you win or lose)
  • Replayability: 6/10 (there are a lot of valuable rewards for repeated runs, but the entry cost after the first run holds it back to some extent)
  • Format: Special (see below)
  • Type: PVP
  • Deck: Constructed
  • Rewards: Varies based upon how much you win

You likely already have at least a few Cataclysm packs you’ve already obtained from drops, in-game events, or pre-orders, so you can use those. Once again, here’s a reminder that you can’t buy Cataclysm packs yet, and you can’t craft any Cataclysm cards yet either. Also, Standard packs won’t have any Cataclysm cards in them yet — not until the expansion is actually released next week.

How exactly does this Tavern Brawl work?

Before you even open the Tavern Brawl pane, you should go ahead and open any Cataclysm packs you have. Once you do, enter the Tavern Brawl, and you’ll be greeted by a screen that looks just like the one from the Heroic Brawliseum (eugh), where you normally would have to pay an entry fee — but your first run is free. Build your deck, including the new cards, and keep playing until you reach either six wins or three losses, whatever comes first.

Since this Brawl involves a run consisting of multiple games, keep in mind that you can interrupt your run at any point and pick it up later. You should be queued against players that have a similar win-loss ratio to what you have at the moment — so if you win games, you’ll likely face tougher opponents; but if you’re losing, you’ll probably be pitted other players who aren’t doing so well either.

Finally, if you want to keep playing after that free first run, the cost is either two Tavern Tickets, 300 Gold, or 400 Runestones.

What cards can I use to build Cataclysm Pre-Release Tavern Brawl decks?

The eligible card pool for this brawl will be:

Eligible Sets

  • Cataclysm
  • Across the Timeways
  • Event Set
  • Core Set

In addition, players will be granted temporary access to the Deathwing, Worldbreaker Hero Card for the duration of the event.

There’s also a list of Banned Cards for the event. It includes:

Banned Cards

  • All Across the Timeways Legendary Cards
  • All Echoes of the Infinite Mini-Set Imbue Cards
  • Twilight Timehopper
  • Flux Revenant
  • Crusader Aura
  • Deja Vu
  • Bob the Bartender

Update: The following cards have just been banned as well.

  • Chillfallen Baron
  • Remnant of Rage
  • Frostwyrm’s Fury
  • Stitched Giant
  • Frost Strike
  • Hematurge

What decks do I need to win the Cataclysm Pre-Release Tavern Brawl?

We’ll start with some cheaper decks that don’t require too many new Cataclysm cards, but do keep in mind that most of them are very aggressive decks. After that, we’ll also present a few slower, more control-oriented decks that better showcase the new Cataclysm mechanics like the Herald and Colossal cards — but those do require you to get a bit lucky with your pack opening.

Frost Death Knight

    AAECAdvJBgLLpQXh6wYO9eMEh/YEsvcEtIAFrqEF1J4G1uUG2+UG3eUG3uUGo5IHxawHmLAHh78HAAA=
  • This is definitely one of the most popular decks for this pre-release Brawl due to the fact that it requires a minimal amount of new cards — only Blackwing Experiment, which you can replace with other good 2-cost minions like Prized Vendor. So if you didn’t get too many Cataclysm packs, definitely consider this deck.

Update: Blizzard has now banned most of the key cards from this deck, rendering it invalid.

No Hand Dragon Hunter

  • Deck code:
    AAECAR8AD6mfBKnUBJCnB5inB+yqB9SvB5iwB+yyB4S9B/O/B4PAB7TAB7XAB7nAB/nDBwAA
  • Another relatively cheap option, since it does require a few new cards, but they’re commons and rares, which you’re much more likely to get in your packs than epics or legendaries. Play this aggressively, don’t be afraid to dump your hand (hence the name), which you can refill with Arrow Retriever, in addition to get synergy from Quel’dorei Fletcher.

Aggro Dragon Demon Hunter

  • Deck code:
    AAECAea5AwKYoASongYO0p8EkqQH7KoH9aoHmLAHmbAHhLEH4rEH6LEH7LIHhL0Hlb8HtcAH+cMHAAA=
  • One more relatively cheap option for players, requiring only a few commons and rares from Cataclysm. It plays similar to the old Aggro Demon Hunter that hinges on Perennial Serpent, but carries a strong dragon package.

Aggro Burn Rogue

  • Deck code:
    AAECAaIHApegBOqyBw6RnwT1nwT2nwT3nwS9ngbZogbX8wbmoweMrQeOrQf7rQfZrwe2sgf5wwcAAA==
  • Our final “cheap and aggressive” option for this Brawl, since we know many players won’t have access to a lot of Cataclysm packs at this point. This is a more tempo-oriented Rogue that tries to burn down the opponent as fast as possible, flourishing on its strong early game.

Handbuff Priest

  • Deck code:
    AAEBAa0GBKqKBI7mBuiyB7XABw2c1ASCrQebrQedrQfgrQfjrQePsAeYsAetsQfbsQfmsgfnsgeBwAcAAA==
  • This is a nice counter to cheaper and more aggressive decks, since it involves plenty of healing and can fight for the board.

Spell Damage Burn Mage

  • Deck code:
    AAECAf0EApegBIi+Bw79ngSyngaG5gbopQf1pQftrAeLsQfWsgfWvAe1wAf0wQf5wweGxAeSxAcAAA==
  • Although this deck includes the new legendary Archmage Kalec, it’s not an absolute requirement: you have plenty of other spells and sources of spell damage to destroy enemy minions and burn your opponent directly when it’s time to close the game.

Control Herald Warrior

  • Credit: vicioussyndicate.com
  • Deck code:
    AAECAQcE4esG7o8HzskHm9QHDYigBImgBI7UBJKkB+qnB5StB/yvB4+xB4++B6/BB7DBB/nDB6DFBwAA
  • If you opened the new Ragnaros Colossal for Warrior, you have to try this deck. This is a strong control option that keeps the enemy board clear while building up to that Ragnaros finisher.

Herald Shaman

  • Credit: ExplodingGuitar
  • Deck code:
    AAECAaoIBOHrBtC/B4LUB5vUBw2vnwTTvgaSpAfwqgf1rAeQrQe8sQePvgfDwAfJwAf3wAf5wAf2wQcAAA==
  • Much like with Warrior, playing this deck requires on you having obtained the new Al’Akir colossal for Shaman. If you did, focus on playing your Herald cards as soon as possible to enable your Al’Akir.

Onyxia Death Knight

  • Credit: lemmycaution415
  • Deck code:
    AAECAeaKBwa05gTY5QaOvweavwfqyQeb1AcM9OMEh/YEs/cEmIEF1eUG5uUGkasH4rEHj74H9sEHmsUH0MUHAAA=
  • This is somewhat similar to what a deck I played myself during the recent Theorycrafting event, and had some success with, but it requires the new Arisen Onyxia Colossal for Death Knight. If you did get that card, play your Heralds as fast as possible to activate her while controlling the board (which is your strong point).

Even if you’re not interested in getting super serious with it, the free rewards are worth your time

Rewards for this Pre-Release Tavern Brawl include Cataclysm packs, Across the Timeways packs, Cataclysm common cards, and Cataclysm rare cards. The number of rewards increases with each win, up to the maximum of six wins.

If you absolutely crash and burn and end the event with zero wins, you’ll still walk away with a very nice consolation prize: one Cataclysm pack and one Across the Timeways pack. So even if you’re not super serious about the event, it’s still a good idea to try the brawl anyway, since the minimum reward is well worth it!
