The decks you need to win the A Totally Normal Game of Hearthstone? Tavern Brawl

We’ve got ourselves a brand-new Hearthstone Tavern Brawl this week! A Totally Normal Game of Hearthstone? Tavern Brawl has very simple rules but unpredictable results: whenever you play a card, the game plays another, random card, right after yours.

So no, this is most definitely not a totally normal game of Hearthstone, and you may be feeling the sting of false advertisement right now. But steel yourself, my friend, and read on to find out how you can win this battle against the random fate of the cards!

Tavern Brawl basics

  • Name: A Totally Normal Game of Hearthstone?
  • Description: Play a totally normal game of Hearthstone! After you play a card, who knows what will happen!
  • Fun level: 7/10
  • Difficulty: 6/10
  • Replayability: 7/10
  • Format: Standard
  • Type: PVP
  • Deck: Constructed
  • Rewards: One Cataclysm card pack

You’ll be asked to build a deck using the Constructed (Standard) card pool. The game will play out with a single, special rule: whenever you play a card, the game picks a random card and plays it right after. Just like the card picks is totally random, so are its targets if there are any. It’s exactly like when you play one of the Yogg-Saron cards, for instance.

The key to winning this Brawl is to abuse that mechanic: even though the effects are random, on average, random effects tend to help you more than harm you. So you’re aiming to maximize the amount of cards you play, and reap the benefit from all of the random stuff the game will throw at the board.

Under that scenario, decks with lots of cheap cards will obviously shine. Cheap spells and minions, effects that allow you to generate or Discover even more cheap cards are what you’re looking for. Avoid heavy decks and big cards on this one — you might not even survive long enough to use them!

The decks you need to win the A Totally Normal Game of Hearthstone? Tavern Brawl

Discover Mage

  • Discover Mage fits the bill perfectly for what this Brawl wants: lots of cheap spells that keep allowing you to Discover more cheap spells, so you won’t ever run out. The strategy is simply to abuse those effects and lean on the constant barrage of randomness.

Face Hunter

  • Face is the place! This is a strong deck on ladder right now with lots of cheap cards and ways to refill your hand after playing said hand. Perfect for this brawl format.

Quest Demon Hunter

  • Deck code:
    AAECAdKLBQKmigTvmAcOg58Etp8E0p8Es6AEtKAE4fgF3v8G/oMHtJcHtpcHtZgHyqcHobEHlb8HAAA=
  • The Demon Hunter quest might not be the strongest deck on Constructed at the moment, but for this Brawl, it fits like a glove. You have lots of cheap cards that are constantly damaging your enemy, with the addition of all the random effects.

A fun brawl that almost plays like a normal game of Hearthstone

Since this brawl uses Standard decks, games might play out very similarly to what you’ll see these days… in theory. The random effects after each card will make all the difference, of course. But play patterns and strategies will probably be emulated straight from ladder.

The key is to know which decks can best reap the benefits from playing lots of cheap cards and getting lots of random effects which will, on average, benefit you. So good luck out there, Yogg take the wheel, and may the luckiest player win!
