Diablo animated series in development with Netflix, with hints for other franchises

Johanna Faries made the day (if not the Blizzard Watch Bingo Card) by announcing that we’re finally getting a Diablo animated series in partnership with Netflix. And all I can say is finally, because we started speculating on a Diablo animated series since 2018 when when rumors were going around that Blizzard were in “final talks” with Netflix, and more rumors spawned by a trademark filing in 2019. After watching Netflix’s Castlevania series, which launched in 2017, a Diablo series in the same vein made a lot of sense… but the rumors amounted to nothing until now.

Though what we know now is still very little, outside of “we are in active development of an animated series for Diablo with the Netflix team.” I find myself really hoping for a franchise-timeline spanning story. Not just focusing on one of Diablo‘s five games stories (yes, Diablo Immortal has a story), but the full sweep:  foundation of Sanctuary by Lilith and Inarius, the Sin Wars between Inarius’ Cathedral of the Light and the Greater Evils’ Temple of the Triune, all the way through the defeat of Mephisto in Diablo 4’s Lord of Hatred — I want it all. Of course, that means multiple seasons, but hey, what is hopium for if not, you know, hope?

Faries was kind enough to include a little teaser in the announcement that we can anticipate “other franchises” getting the same treatment. Can you picture an Overwatch series? Finally? We’ve gotten so much amazing media from that team that it would just slot right into the line-up. And I’m sorry, if we get a StarCraft animated series before the new Starcraft game in 2030? I might actually implode, Blizzard.
