Talebound turns Azeroth into a roguelite adventure

Following in the footsteps of Plunderstorm, World of Warcraft is introducing an entirely new way to play with Talebound, an action-RPG roguelike game mode coming to the PTR sometime in October.

Go it alone or bring a friend as you journey to the strange little town of Quillgrave, where cozy, creepy vibes make the perfect backdrop for adventure. There, a mysterious figure known only as the Storyteller invites you to step inside his tales, battle through ever-changing stories, grow stronger with each run, and discover just how dangerous a good story can become when you’re the one living it.

The Storyteller’s tales unfold across locations that feel hauntingly familiar, echoing some of Azeroth’s spookiest corners. You’ll venture through Darkhaven, Greenthistle Wood, the Greywake’s Expedition, and the Grove of the Night Court—but don’t assume you already know the stories these places have to tell.

What to expect from Talebound’s gameplay

Each tale puts you in control of one of three unique classes built around three core actions: dodge, attack, and defend. In true roguelike fashion, death isn’t the end. Every failed run gives you another opportunity to grow your abilities, change your build, and return to the Storyteller’s tale stronger than before.
  • The Slayer — A relentless monster hunter armed with swords and guns, built to tear through eldritch horrors at any range. Fill the battlefield with Explosive Shots, Throwing Knives, Minefields, and Shrapnel Rounds.
  • The Inquisitor — A zealous warrior who wields the Light to burn away the face of evil. Purify your enemies, unleash Light’s Wrath, and call down Rapture to leave your foes consumed in holy fire.
  • The Witch — Why fight your enemies yourself when nature’s creepiest creatures can do it for you? Unleash a Plague of Frogs, transform into a cat to escape danger, and summon a Swarm of Spiders to overwhelm anything unfortunate enough to stand in your path.

Of course, like any good roguelike, you can’t possibly expect to win in a single run. Fortunately, the townsfolk of Quillgrave are ready to help you prepare for the next chapter. Between tales, you’ll seek out specialists who can permanently alter how you approach each run. The Arcanist unlocks new potions and flasks to bring into your adventures. Scribes offer new talents that can completely change your playstyle. The Outfitter improves your starting power, giving you an increasingly deadly head start with every new tale. Finally, the Antiquarian provides powerful passive bonuses that augment your adventures and may be just what you need to finally reach the end of the Storyteller’s latest nightmare.

The Rewards from Talebound

But we all know the real reason we play game modes like this: the rewards. Talebound offers a collection of gorgeous new transmogs and mounts inspired by the macabre world of Quillgrave. And with Player Housing now part of World of Warcraft, you’ll also be able to earn an assortment of delightfully creepy decorations—perfect for adding a little more macabre charm to your home.

After all, surviving the Storyteller’s tales is temporary. Looking appropriately spooky is forever.
