Breakfast Topic: Embracing that Class Fantasy

I was thinking about this one as far back as during Wrath when they talked about bringing distinctiveness between specs. I mean, how does an Assassination Rogue differ from an Outlaw? (I love that spec name.) What sets Retribution Paladins apart? What’s the class fantasy for a Holy Priest? I’m sure you’re always in danger of alienating someone when you talk about the ideal version of any class or spec within a class.

Some are deceptively complex — we’ve had Guardian Druids turning into bears and tanking since before we had Guardian Druids, but for the entire life of the class they tanked via dodging, which is the opposite of what bears would be expected to do. (Don’t underestimate bears, however.) Similarly, I often have trouble with the Arms warrior because it just doesn’t feel like a master of arms should to me.

So with that in mind, are you down for where your class or spec seems to be going? Does Blizzard’s vision for the class fantasy mesh with what your headcanon for the class is? (Yes, I used the word headcanon there.) Are you a Marksmanship Hunter who feels forced to switch to Beast Mastery because for you, Hunters aren’t Hunters without that combination of Ranged DPS and pet? How does your class fantasy stack up?
