Steven Moffat is stepping down as showrunner of Doctor Who
And only the new Doctor Who to air in 2016 will be the Christmas Special. How’s that for coal in your TARDIS-shaped stocking?
After 7 years of running Doctor Who (he won’t be stepping down until next year), Steven Moffat will be passing the showrunning torch to Chris Chibnall according to Radio Times.
Before taking over the show in 2010, Moffat wrote many outstanding episodes including Blink, as well as the two-parter Silence in the Library and Forest of the Dead that introduced the Doctor’s wife River Song.
When he took over the show from Russell T Davies he introduced Matt Smith as the new Doctor and Amy Pond as the new companion. Those two were eventually replaced by Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman. Though Jenna Coleman has just recently left the show, Peter Calpaldi stays on for now. The final season for Moffat however will not be shown this year. It has been delayed by the BBC until next year which means that the only original Doctor Who left this year is the annual Christmas special.
Chris Chibnall is no stranger to the Whoverse. He’s written many episodes of Doctor Who already (Dinosaurs on a Spaceship anyone?) He’s also written for Torchwood and ran the critically acclaimed Broadchurch.
He has plenty of time to figure out his game plan. His season of Doctor Who won’t air until 2018.
