What have you held onto too long?

There’s a common behavior in RPGs: players have a habit of holding onto useful items until they absolutely need them, and when that time comes, they don’t know it and still don’t use those items. That’s how we all end up completing Final Fantasy games with a pack full of unused Megalixirs. However, in my case, it’s mostly the useless consumables that last forever in my bags.

My Paladin, for example, still has a Holy Mightstone in her bank. If I remember correctly, and it’s possible I don’t, the Holy Mightstone was a reward for one of the level 60 Paladin quests back in vanilla WoW. I’d intended to save it for when I fought the Lich King — it seemed cool thematically — and didn’t use it on our first kill because I wasn’t sure it would be our first kill. And since we’d killed him, using it on subsequent kills just didn’t seem nearly as cool. Thus, I’ve had it ever since.

But arguably, the Holy Mightstone was useful, so I’ll do one better: my Priest still has 86 Path of Illidan charges available. Path of Illidan was a consumable, cosmetic loot reward from the WoW TCG back in 2008/2009. That means, since I first claimed my prize in (probably) 2009, I’ve only used Path of Illidan 14 times. I’m not actually going to do the math, but that’s something like 1.25 uses per year. Most likely, I used a bunch of charges immediately after getting it, then went multiple years without using it at all, despite the item being in my backpack full-time. It’s a limited edition item! I need to make every use count, right? At this rate, I might use the last charge by the 22nd century. Maybe.

Have you held onto any items like this? Items that don’t necessarily have sentimental value or historical significance, but you still don’t use? They’re not useful in any way, but you keep them because… reasons, I guess?

I just used a charge of Path of Illidan to get a header image for this post. That’s 85! It doesn’t look as impressive as I’d remembered. What a piece of junk.
