How will you choose your Battle for Azeroth main?

classes in legion

It’s graduation season. Those childhood wonderings of what do I want to be when I grow up give way to a moment of decision. College? What school? What major? A gap year? Enter the workforce? This year, my dearest daughter is graduating, and all these questions are running through her mind.

In World of Warcraft, players choose their career, but we call it a class. Expansions are the ideal time to change your class, specialization, or role. The prepatch is coming soon. The Beta wonderings will give way to a moment of decision. Tank? Healer? DPS? What class? What spec? I’ve decided to change mains in Battle and all these questions are running through my mind.

As much as both my daughter and I would, at times, love someone else to make these decisions for us, the truth is, only we can make them. Only we have 24/7 access to our lives. Sure our family or guild will give impact to, and feel the impact of, our decisions, but they are ours to make.

My question for you is how you will go about choosing your main? While I’ve narrowed my choices down to three (Hunter, Monk, Shaman), the options for evaluating a class feel lacking. The opening scenario (either Lorderon in Beta or Broken Shore in the live game) can give varying experiences depending on the other players involved. I ran Lorderon on a Monk and on a Hunter. The Monk took longer and died more often. Was that related to the class, or the other players in the scenario?

Standing at the target dummy learning the rotation is good for getting a feel for the spells and abilites, but doesn’t tell you much about how the class will fare in the open world. Even doing quests in beta can give you a skewed perspective. With Blizzard’s numbers balancing pass yet to take place, everything in beta right now is in flux. While the numbers can change all the time, even between raid tiers, they’re still an important part of how a class feels.

So, my friends, what will you main be in the expansion, and how did you come to your decision?
