The secret Hivemind mount has already been found — and it comes with a group mount speed buff

You might see some players floating around capital cities as gigantic, purple brains. That’s because the hunt for the secretive Hivemind mount is over.

This unique mount was first seen in datamined files from the Battle for Azeroth alpha earlier this year. Since then, people have been searching for its source, but actually obtaining the mount wasn’t possible until last week’s Tides of Vengeance 8.1 patch. The community of people on the WoW Secret Finding Discord channel correctly guessed that it would be a treasure hunt like the Lucid Nightmare and Riddler’s Mind-Worm mounts — and so they got to work, unraveling the mystery in less than a week.

Now, a how-to available anyone who wants their own floating brain. The whole list of things you need to do in order to get it is long and spans much of the world. The unmarked quest for the mount takes you around Azeroth, into dungeons, and finally to the Court of Stars for a group-required challenge. This final challenge involves searching for specific enemies to open a portal. Once inside, there’s an entire puzzle where you have to cross both flying platforms and arcane lava. At the end of it all, you get the Hivemind mount dropped into your bags and something extra.

But the Hivemind is more than a mount, and there’s a point of contention with the mount’s special effect: Joined Hivemind. Right now, a maximum of four people can enter the same Hivemind mount, like a vehicle, and increase their mount speed by 10 percent for each member, up to 40 percent. Some worry that this could be unfair in PVP and Mythic dungeons.

The intention, according to Celestalon, is that the mount’s bonus only works with the four people that you most recently completed the grouped event with (you can re-complete it to swap who the players are). Currently, this bonus seems like it works with anyone if you’re using the mount on a character that didn’t personally complete the whole hunt, although Celestalon’s comments suggest that might be a bug.

Bug or not, you can get to work on the Hivemind quest right now, with these handy instructions.
