The Queue: No rest
I had trouble sleeping last night, so I started writing this very early this morning. Then I crashed and now it’s 5 minutes to publish time and I need to fly — but I am still very tired, to be clear.
Anyhow, from one tired brain to a varying number of other brains in various states of awake:
It’s Queue time.
Q4tQ: What classic movie monster is scariest?
Q4tQ: Do you prefer sci-fi horror, fantasy horror, modern day horror, or horror set in the past?
Q4tQ: What do you think is going to be the next big concept or go-to monster in the horror sphere?
- I don’t think I know enough “classic” horror to have a solid answer here, but the zombies and cat creatures in Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island scared the bajeebers out of me as a kid.
- Honestly, it depends entirely on how it’s done. Sci-fi horror can be a lot of fun, but it also (in my experience) can lean into action-horror. Modern-day horror has been pretty solid lately, so I’d say it’s probably the sub-genre I watch most. They’re all great, though! Tell me a story that’s effectively scary, and the setting is just a scary cherry on top.
- Something that takes you through the multiverse to your worst fears. Basically, anything that involves the multiverse.
Q4tQ: Silent Hill 2 remake, or Silent Hill f ?
I honestly know almost nothing about the Silent Hill series except that it’s weird and scary. I’ve never actually played any of the games in the series — but I have watched the movie several times. For some odd reason, I love watching it at like 3a.m. when I can’t sleep.
But game-wise? I missed the boat on the series. The first two games came out before I was even 10 years old, and even the third game was before I really played a lot of M-rated horror games (plus, I didn’t exactly want to jump into the series at the third game).
So they’ve always been fascinating to me and I’ve been really interested in them, but never quite had the chance. I was INCREDIBLY excited for Kojima’s take on it, and then equally crushed when it was canceled.
To circle back to your question, though, I’m excited for both! SH2 is known to be good — as long as the remake doesn’t completely bork it, it’ll be a great second chance to experience the series. As for f, it has both a higher chance to succeed, being a more modern SH game, but it’s also unknown enough that it could completely flop.
One of my college friends adores [Over the Garden Wall], too. I really should watch it someday.
Yes, you absolutely should. In fact, you probably should stop what you’re doing and watch it now. It’s amazing, and sometimes just thinking about it makes me teary-eyed. I adore it with every fiber of my being and it’s become a tradition to watch it every year in October.
Sony are releasing an ‘Elite’ controller (I forget the name as I am derp) and it looks great. It has very similar specs to the Series 2 Elite controller (I have one but I did not pay anywhere near retail) but the one sticking point is that it’s about 200 dollars which is… insanely expensive. o.o
UGH. Yes, it’s the DualSense Edge and I was incredibly excited for it when it was announced. The GF and I share controllers on the PS5, and not only did the idea of profiles sound nice for sharing purposes, they also seemed like a nice way to toggle between modes between different game types. Also, the extra bells and whistles like the trigger thingies seemed very nice additions as well.
So when I saw the stupid thing was going to cost the same price as a freaking Switch Lite?? My excitement was thoroughly deflated. Maybe down the line when I want to treat myself, but for the “first-ever ultra-customizable controller developed by PlayStation,” I’d like it to at least come in more than one color (white). Or, y’know, let the color itself be part of the customization.
Right now, it feels like an incredibly steep cost for the kind of accessibility and customization I wish controllers just had by default.
Has anyone taken an evoker through Torghast yet? I’m kind of curious what their anima power selection is going to be. I’m thinking it will be the generic, “increase stat by x%”, “looting phantasma gives a shield”, and so on. Do they have options that actually affect their powers?
ETA: Asking because I did a run this morning after being away from the Maw for a month or so, and started wondering how the new class would experience it.
While I personally have not done this, Wowhead has a nice breakdown of all the Anima Powers (so far) for Evokers in Torghast. I’d comment more, but I still know next to nothing about the new class.
QftQ: Does scarcity, whether real or purposeful, of entertainment products keep you trying to score an item or do you just shrug it off?
This, like other questions here, depends! I think I typically hit a point where it doesn’t feel fun to try for something, but I do often enjoy the “queue hunting” for rare things (like a PS5) to see if I can score a tough-to-get product, because the rush of success feels nice.
But if there’s only 100 of something and it’s expensive as all heck, I usually don’t bother. Getting my hopes up there usually just leads to sadness :(
Q4tQ: Which phase of the prepatch do you see bringing back the most amount of players? Phase 1 gives everyone their talent revamp, but phase 2 brings the actual event along with Evokers.
The second phase, I’d wager. A lot will come back for the first, but the second will bring both old AND new to the game. New classes can be pretty huge for player interest!
Whew! I made it! That’s our Queue for today — be sure to watch some good fall shows and movies (be they horror or otherwise). Oh, and leave questions for tomorrow’s writer.
