Five great cards to combo with the new Black Panther card from the Marvel SNAP Warriors of Wakanda November 2022 Season Pass
Marvel SNAP’s new season is themed around the upcoming Wakanda Forever movie. The Warriors of Wakanda season began November 7 and will continue through December 5. In addition to the normal Boosters, Credits, and Gold rewards earned on the Season Pass track, players can earn a brand new card, Black Panther, as well as new variants and avatars for Wakanda based heroes already in the card pool like Okoye and Nakia.
Let’s take a look at five great cards to make the most out of T’Challa.
King T’Challa enters the fray
The new card for this season is Black Panther. It is a 5-cost, 4-Power card with On Reveal: Double this card’s power. With the right combination of cards, Black Panther can achieve huge power, but he’ll feel safe at home in the Wakanda Location (Cards here can’t be destroyed here).
A less obvious pairing, at least from a lore perspective, is T’Challa hanging out with the Masters of the Mystic Arts in the Kamar Taj Location (On Reveal effects happen twice at this location). But as an On Reveal, Black Panther naturally benefits. 4-Power becomes 8, and 8 becomes 16.
Keep in mind that On Reveal happens before Location effects, so if you play Black Panther on Xandar (Cards here have +1 Power.) Black Panther will double first, and then get the +1, so you’ll have a 9-Power Panther. Likewise, Necrosha (Cards here have -2 Power.) and Negative Zone (Cards here have -3 Power.) will reduce power after the buff. It’s still not advisable to play Black Panther at either of those Locations if you can avoid it.
Buff Black Panther before you play: Okoye, Nakia, Forge
Don’t mess with the Dora Milaje. Okoye (On Reveal: Give every card in your deck +1 Power) and Nakia (On Reveal: Give the 2 leftmost cards in your hand +2 Power) fit thematically with Black Panther, and they fit mechanically as well. Each of these cards can buff Black Panther before he hits the board giving him even more power. Remember that Nakia has a hand placement component so make sure she is going to hit Black Panther before you play her. Forge (Give the next card you play +2 Power) doesn’t fit the Wakanda theme, but Black Panther will welcome his buff nonetheless.
Double your fun with Wong
When Wong (Ongoing: Your On Reveal abilities at this location happen twice) isn’t single handedly saving Phase 4, he’s a rock star in Marvel SNAP. He replicates the effect of Kamar Taj, doubling On Reveal effects. If you drop an unbuffed Black Panther on the Location with Wong, he’ll be a 5-Cost, 16-Power card at the end of the turn. That is as much power as Destroyer (On Reveal: Destroy your other cards) without the drawback.
Odin re-activates On Reveals
Odin (On Reveal: Activate the On Reveal abilities of your other cards at this location.) works well with all On Reveal effects. The All-Father will make Black Panther’s effect fire again making even a completely unbuffed Panther go from 8 to 16. If you managed to get another buff into Black Panther, either from Nova (When this is destroyed, give your cards +1 Power), Blue Marvel (Ongoing: Your other cards have +1 Power), or a Location like Stark Tower (After turn 5, give all cards here +2 Power), Odin will let Black Panther double that Power, too.
Transfer your Black Panther to other locations with Arnim Zola or Taskmaster
Armin Zola (On Reveal: Destroy a random friendly card here; add copies of it to the other locations) gives you a way to spread Black Panther’s power to two other Locations. You need to ensure that your super buffed Black Panther is the only card at the Location where you are going to play Arnim Zola, and that you have an open space at the two other Locations. Arnim can place a card on a Flooded Location from Storm (On Reveal: Flood this location. Next turn is the last turn cards can be played here.) or in The Vault (On turn 6, cards can’t be played here.). Hail Hydra, indeed. If you don’t have Zola, Taskmaster (On Reveal: Set this card’s Power equal to the Power of the last card you played) can come close to replicating the effect, but at only one Location.
Armor and other counter cards (Shang-Chi, Scorpion, Cosmo)
At this point, we’ve seen several ways to get Black Panthers up to 16-Power. That is a huge amount of Power in SNAP. Shang Chi (On Reveal: Destroy all enemy cards at this location that have 9 or more Power) should be a popular counter. He’ll send T’Challa to the Ancestral Plains. You can protect your T’Challa with Armor (Ongoing: Cards at this location can’t be destroyed) or by placing him at the Wakanda Location if it is in play.
Scorpion (On Reveal: Afflict cards in your opponent’s hand with -1 Power) is a devastating play if Black Panther is in your opponent’s hand. Instead of a 5-Cost, 8-Power Panther, your opponent gets a 5-Cost, 6-Power Panther. It would be a Captain Marvel (At the end of the game, move to a location that wins you the game. (If possible)) without her cool effect.
Finally, Black Panther may tilt the meta back toward more On Reveal cards, and no card shuts down On Reveal decks like everyone’s favorite Russian canine cosmonaut, Cosmo (Ongoing: On Reveal abilities won’t happen at this location) Play Cosmo and follow up with Mystique (On Reveal: If the last card you played has an Ongoing ability, this card gains it) as your next card, but at a different Location, and your opponent will have only one place left to try to get any value out of their On Reveal cards.
Earn Black Panther now with Premium or Premium+, or exercise patience if you’re Free to Play
Free to Play players can work their way through the Season Pass track, but some rewards are locked to Premium players only. You can see if a reward is available to Free to Play players by the “Free” banner in the Season Pass track, like in the screenshot above. The new card, Black Panther, plus all the cosmetics (avatars, Variants, card backs) are locked behind the Premium paywall. Premium is $9.99 and must be purchased each season, which generally lasts about a month. Premium+ is $14.99. It’s simply Premium that unlocks the first ten levels of the Season Pass track for you.
A Free to Play can eventually get the Black Panther card and all the cosmetics, but they will have to be patient. Black Panther will go into the Series 3 card collection and can be found in Collector’s Reserves on the Collection Road at level 462 and above, but not until the season after he is introduced. The current Season Pass should last until early December. The next Season Pass will go from early December until early January. It’s at that point, early January, that Black Panther and all the cosmetics from this season will become available in the Collector’s Reserve.
Second Dinner has to walk a careful line. Black Panther will see plenty of play early on as a shiny, novel way to play. He still needs to be powerful enough to see play after the newness wears off, but not so powerful as to make players feel like he’s required to climb the ranks — and therefore they’re required to pay out to be competitive.
