How to play Leapfrogger in Hearthstone Battlegrounds

Leapfrogger is back in the Hearthstone Battlegrounds! Equally loved and hated by players for how much it can affect the game — and how long its animations can take to finish — the fact is that its return allows one of the strongest builds in the game to exist once again.

When properly played, a Leapfrogger build can make your Beast board keep getting buffed over and over, to incredibly high levels. Despite the fact that the minions have small stats initially, that quickly changes as soon as the first Leapfrogger dies and the engine goes off.

So, are you interested in this Leapfrogger strategy? Let’s read on to find out how to execute it.

How to build the ideal Leapfrogger board in Hearthstone Battlegrounds

Leapfrogger is a tier 2 Beast with 3/3 stats and:

Deathrattle: Give a friendly Beast +1/+1 and this Deathrattle.

That effect means that his on-death buff will keep repeating itself — and adding higher and higher — as long as friendly Beasts still exist on your board. Which invites you to attempt to do two things:

  • trigger this Deathrattle as many times as possible, and
  • make sure you keep spawning more Beasts so there’s always a new target for your Leapfrogger buff to land on.

You’ll want to make your Leapfrogger engine get started as soon as a match starts, positioning your Leapfroggers to the left and giving them Taunt if possible. You’ll want to make them retrigger, which can be accomplished in a few ways:

  • by giving them Reborn, which can be accomplished via Sprightly Scarab
  • by positioning a Monstrous Macaw before your other Beasts, so that it triggers the Leapfrogger Deathrattle they (hopefully) got after your initial Leapfroggers died
  • by having Titus Rivendare on your right in order to re-trigger those Deathrattles. Moira Bronzebeard can also work, but as a tier 7 card she’s a much less reliable an option to obtain.

With all of that in mind, this is what the ideal Leapfrogger board looks like:

  1. Leapfroggers (one or two, preferably golden) with Taunt and Reborn, positioned to the left of your board.
  2. Monstrous Macaw (preferably golden and with Reborn) after your Leapfrogger(s).
  3. Assorted Beasts, preferably golden. Ideally, you’ll want Beasts that summon other Beasts in combat, like Manasaber and Sly Raptor.
  4. Titus Rivendare (preferably golden).

That’s the gist of it.

Which Trinkets to pick if you’re building a Leapfrogger board?

Trinkets are in the game right now, and selecting the right ones can make implementing this strategy much easier, by allowing you easier access to the minions that should be on your final board.

Goldenizer Supply is perhaps the strongest one (despite being a Lesser Trinket) so it should be an insta-grab for you. You’ll want to turn your Titus Rivendare golden ASAP, without a doubt. Once you do, Leapfrogger itself and Monstrous Macaw are next in line.

If you can find the Greater Trinket Rivendare Portrait, it can pair well with Goldenizer, for obvious reasons. But even without Goldenizer, Rivendare Portrait is a solid pick for this board.

You could also nab Trinkets that allow you to get more Beasts, to make it easier to find your non-Rivendare key pieces. These are Lucky Tabby (Lesser) and Colorful Compass (which comes in Lesser and Greater versions).

Hopefully you’ve learned more about Leapfrogger, and may find success with our friendly leaping friends.
