What do you hope to see at Tokyo Game Show this week?
The Tokyo Game Show is this week and it’s the final big gaming showcase event of the year (while the Game Awards are still scheduled for December — hopefully with some fixes — we typically only get a few announcements and seldom gameplay). And while we already have a grasp of the release schedule for the remainder of the year, the TGS is where a lot of big names announce their plans for 2025.
The biggest question mark is Nintendo, as the Switch successor has been promised to be announced before the end of March next year. Alleged leaks and rumors are flying fast lately, though, and many wonder if it’ll be announced this week in advance of the show — a situation that would definitely appeal to their partners and third-party developers as they’ve been forced to keep their own successor titles hidden while waiting on Nintendo. If we do get an official reveal, we should expect to see many launch titles announced at TGS, but if Nintendo remains silent we may actually have a paucity of new game announcements (at least for Nintendo fans).
Switch isn’t the only console that will be heavily focused on at the Tokyo Game Show, as Sony will be making its first appearance there in a few years. Of course, Sony has a big mess to cleanup: the PS5 Pro announcement has been an unmitigated disaster. It’ll be interesting to see how the company attempts to recover — I’m guessing we’ll be seeing some items (games? accessories?) bundled with the console to alleviate the price concerns but the damage may be irreversible.
Games will get their time in the spotlight, with new title announcements or first showcases for earlier announcements getting the bulk of the coverage. The game I’m hoping we get some gameplay reveal for is Professor Layton and the New World of Steam which shouldn’t be reliant on the Switch successor announcement to get time in the spotlight as it was announced some time ago. Sadly Microsoft tends to focus on its Asian development teams at TGS so I’m not hopeful for any announcements regarding Blizzard games, although Diablo 4 Vessel of Hatred is a prime candidate for some exposure in anticipation of its reveal next month.
What do you think? Will we get the Switch successor announcement? Can Sony undo the damage? What games or series do you hope to see announcements regarding?
