The Queue: We’re supposed to save princesses, not slay them

Tomorrow sees the release of Slay the Princess — Pristine Cut, an updated version of the game (included for free if you already own it!) that expands the original with both “new” princesses and more fleshed-out paths for other princesses. It will also be releasing on consoles for the first time, now available on Switch, PS4/5, and Xbox. This was my “Game of the Year” for 2023 and I’m super-excited to have a chance to Slay — or Save — the Princess again.

It’s kind of hard to really describe the game without getting into spoilers but if you’re a fan of spooky games that tend to be on the psychological side then Slay the Princess is most likely right up your alley. There are numerous choices you can make that can radically alter the game, and once you finish you’ll want to play it again (and again) to see what other fates there are to experience.

While we spend hours agonizing over whether we should bring the knife down with us to the basement, let’s answer some questions!

BOVEN WHITEHOOF MOST LIKELY MISSES USA SATURDAY NIGHTMARES (I KNOW I DO!)

Are there any not-good or even bad scary movies that you really enjoy watching? Are there any not-good ones you want to watch, but just can’t sit through?

I’m going to be honest, I’ve never been much of a fan of scary movies. I didn’t really enjoy the Nightmare on Elm Street films until they got campy. Many of my faves are those that are only borderline horror like Frighteners or have a meta/comedy element like the original Scream (which I saw five times in the theatre when it was released). I’ve never seen any of the Saw films, nothing that Jordan Peele has done, and have yet to sit down and watch a Paranormal Activity or a Final Destination — some of us were terrified of logs flying off trucks before that movie, thank you very much.

I don’t think I’ve voluntarily watched a scary movie since Scream 3, they’re just not something I’m interested in watching anymore. Well, except for one film …

LIZ HARPER PROBABLY DOESN’T MISS USA UP ALL NIGHT ALTHOUGH SHE SHOULD BECAUSE IT WAS GREAT

Q4tKal: What is your favorite scary movie?

In my opinion the absolute best scary movie of all time is the original Fright Night. There is definitely some humor/campiness to it, but someone forgot to tell the actors that they didn’t need to go all out. Whether it’s Roddy McDowall playing a washed-up Vincent Price clone or Chris Sarandon as the charming vampire next door chewing every single scene like it was overcooked steak everyone brought their A-game to the proceedings.

Fright Night is one of those movies that you feel is so perfect that you don’t want a remake or sequel because you’re afraid it’ll diminish the original. Thankfully I’ve convinced myself that it has neither.

RED IS CALLING ME OUT ON MY LAZINESS

Q4TQ: what was the first thing you did in the new patch? How are you enjoying the Anniversary event so far?

I used the vault and catalyst to complete the LFR and Normal Hunter Tier armor!

As for the Anniversary event … I haven’t been down to the Caverns of Time yet. Someone remind me to answer this the next time I write the Queue.

ROXXII ASKS A CRAFTY QUESTION

What quest gives the crafting half thingy this week? The delve one Brann gives?

That’s what I’m guessing. It rewards the Pinnacle Cache and the Fractured Spark of Omens can drop from it. If someone else knows for sure please say so in the comments!

TELWAR MAKES ME SEARCH MY MEMORY OF PREVIOUS EXPANSIONS

..what the absolute heck did Magatha do against the Legion?

Hmmmm … I remember her being a Shaman Class Hall follower, so at the minimum she went out and got me resources from missions. She was definitely involved with quests around the Doomstone but I never felt her contribution was a necessary one. Frankly the fact that she wasn’t involved with the Primalists in Dragonflight was the biggest surprise of that expansion.

BRUIN WANTS TO FEEL FRESH AIR ON HIS SKIN AGAIN

Q for the Q!
the next installment of the World Soul Cycle: (do we know) will there be an underground component? Even as is, I really really do not like this underground content. Even with a huge skybox, what can I say.

While it is certainly possible that Midnight will include an underground zone, I find it improbable. We know that the plot has us in a (likely revamped) Quel’thalas and it’s mostly an aboveground area. I also think the dev team will want to mix it up for the players after 50-90% of The War Within will be underground — the low end is if all future tiers are on the surface.

The one thing I do think Midnight will have? An underwater zone. Whether it’s more like Vashj’ir or Nazjatar I can’t say, but I strongly suspect Naga involvement in the course of the expansion.

HIGH DENSITY WAFFLE IS TESTING THE LIMITS OF MOLE MACHINE TECHNOLOGY

Soo can those dark irons tunnel into zereth mortis?

Sadly there are functional limits to the Dark Iron transportation powers. While they can breach the realm of Death as of the patch yesterday, they can only do so into the four main zones of the expansion — no Korthia or Zereth Mortis.

The other zones now reachable with Mole Machine technology are Nazmir, Zuldazar, Tiragarde Sound, Stormsong Valley, the Waking Shores, the Azure Span, and Zaralek Cavern. Sadly like the other transit locations the Dark Iron character must unlock it by visiting its location first; Wowhead put together a handy article with all the locations.

RETPALLYJIL DISCOVERS THE OTHER GREAT NEW FEATURE OF PATCH 11.0.5

Q4tQ:

When I logged in, I got three random non-plate items added to my collection. From Battle for Azeroth.

Huh?

Patch 11.0.5 added a new feature where if you complete a quest on a character you unlock all possible appearances that can be gained by any character. So even if you’ve never leveled through Hellfire Peninsula on a cloth-wearing character, if you completed The Finest Down on any character you’ll have the transmog option for Mirren’s Drinking Hat, arguably the best item added in Burning Crusade. Sadly transmogging to its appearance is still limited to clothies and of course the on-use effect requires the actual hat in your possession, but a recently boosted Warlock can now be stylish with almost no effort.

That’s all the questions I have the ability to answer while waiting for the arrival of the updated Slay the Princess. Hopefully everyone playing WoW is having a blast with the new anniversary festivities. Be sure to ask Matt plenty of questions about it or Vessel of Hatred or anything else that piques your curiosity, and have a fantastic day!
