We finally have a few details on the Mass Effect TV show
We’ve talked before about how Video Games adaptations seem to work better as episodic series than one-shot movies, and in the past few years we’ve seen some amazing series like Arcane, The Last of Us, and Fallout, and some really bad movies like Borderlands. Back in 2021, which in retrospect seems like a much more innocent time, we heard about Amazon working on a Mass Effect show and we were curious about it, but that was where the information ended — until now.
We have news that the Mass Effect series is not only in official development, and there are several new announcements that show the production is truly moving forward. There is a writer/executive producer attached (Daniel Casey, who wrote the ninth Fast and Furious movie) as well as Avid Arad, Michael Gamble (current lead dev on Mass Effect) and Karim Zreik of Cedar Tree Productions, which has a development deal with Amazon already. If you’re wondering where you know Zreik from, he worked as an executive at the Marvel Televison unit, the one that made Dardevil (yay!) and Jessica Jones (also yay!) and Luke Cage (a third yay!) and Iron Fist (look, they can’t all be winners) for Netflix.
So we have some reasonably well known and experienced people on this series, and that’s pretty reassuring. But what we don’t have yet is even the slightest idea of what the series will be about. What story will it be telling? Are we going to get the story of Commander Shepard? Something that ties into the upcoming Mass Effect game? A completely original story in the setting? The answer to any and all of these questions is a heaven shaking, reverberating we don’t know.
Still, with the recent track record of episodic storytelling for video game adaptations — not you, Halo, you really need to get it together — I have to admit I’m excited to see what Amazon does with Mass Effect as a series. There are a lot of ways this could progress and I’m excited for a lot of them. Maybe it’s about Garrus. I’d watch a Garrus show. Maybe we could get an entire episode of Garrus beating people up for candy.
