Which zone from The War Within has your favorite music?
Ever since first hearing the scratchy tones of the original Super Mario Bros. theme, soundtracks have been one of my favorite aspects of gaming. They can set the mood for an entire area, motivate you to rise up to a difficult challenge, and even inject you with fear of a bad guy before you even see their true form.
World of Warcraft is no exception. With twenty years of music from world maps, dungeons, cities, and cinematics, everyone has their favorite (and most despised) tracks. How do the tunes from The War Within stack up to the rest?
The song that greets us at the login screen has changed nearly a dozen times now, but the newest version starts out strong. However, I’m sure I’m not alone in finding myself distracted while selecting my character and consequently filled with dread when the song turns quite intense around the two minute mark.
The Isle of Dorn has a nice, calming score that I’ve enjoyed most out of any of the zones. Dornogal itself has some easy background music which comes in handy for hanging around idle so much of the time while figuring out what part of Khaz Algar to head to next.
A lot of the Ringing Deeps soundtrack has a busy, industrial tilt to it that’s perfect for a cavern filled with steam pipes. It gives me a real Wall Market vibe. Gundargaz has a particularly good theme, but the accelerated inspiring version from Awakening the Machine is probably my single favorite track from the expansion so far. I’ll keep coming back to help Speaker Kuldas with his weekly maintenance long after I’ve collected his mechsuit mount if I can keep rocking out to his peppy soundtrack.
Hallowfall’s tunes are very on-point. The open areas barely remind you of a cavern at all both in atmosPhere and in music. Areas like Tenir’s Ascent have a zippy soundtrack that’s perfect for an airship base. I don’t really enjoy Azj-kahet’s score too much but that’s probably intentional. All of the rapid strings make me feel like I’m sneaking around someplace I’m not supposed to be. The whole zone would give me the willies even if it weren’t filled with enemies with an alarming number of legs.
So which zone in The War Within do you find yourself when you begin tapping your feet to the music? How do this expansion’s tunes compare to your favorites from Azeroth’s past?
