The Queue: and the award goes to…
you, for trying your best today.
I feel like we could all just use that reminder sometimes.
This is The Queue, our daily column where you ask us questions and we’re just really glad you’re here.
Legion Remix was not on the Road map of 2025 was it? (though I sure hope it’s coming)
Technically, no. But in terms of the feral illuminati speculation the community gets up to at times… maybe. Let’s take to the Pepe Silvia whiteboard, shall we?
The timeline toward the end of the year in the graphic turns from a homogenous wow-style mustard yellow to a definitive limey green just as the little updated “this is obviously player housing” banner hangs down, so many people have taken that to mean we are conclusively expecting Legion Remix to hit at the end of the year, beginning of 2026. However, since this not definitively sourced per se, it could also mean something different. Or maybe even nothing at all.
By not stating it outright, they have some degree of deniability just in case they miss the benchmark.
But come on.
I’m going through all the game award categories, and I’m not seeing a very diverse selection of games nominated, just the same ones over and over across multiple catagories. I guess that explains why I managed to work through my backlog, 2024 was a relatively slow year compared to 2023.
This is kind of a twofold issue.
The first half is that several AAA studios, including Blizzard, hack and slashed their way through their personnel at the end of last year, beginning of this year. As such, all that talent which was working on game close to fruition are now gone, those projects shuttered. Also, this means that anyone left at this point is working on projects that are generally “safe.” Think sequels, expansions, live service battle passes, etc. As such, the AAA offerings for something like The Game Awards are sparse. AAA games have a huge marketing budget and brand recognition, and so more people are just going to be generally aware of them by osmosis, and give them an “eh, I’ve heard of this” vote.
The flip side of this token is that, no, actually, there are a lot of really excellent little off-the-wall indie gems that release every year. However, they don’t have that marketing budget, so even if a title really starts to hit, it’s still going to wallow in the shade of AAA. This goes double when there’s a nostalgia hit and recognition from remakes and sequels — Silent Hill 2‘s narrative was truly great in its time, but the remake is the same story as it was 20+ years ago. Even Balatro‘s nod has some people confused, despite it being simultaneously the most approachable and yet most innovative title we’ve seen in a long time, just because they haven’t heard of it.
Anyway, all that to say, support indie game creators. The Indie Game Awards is going on a bit later today, and their slate of nominees is, across the board, packed with fun, weird little guys.
Q4tQ: Who is your favorite Princess? Answers not limited to any particular game or media.
If we’re talking Disney, Tiana. Her songs are the best, and she just wants to work hard and live her life to fulfill her dream, which is a humble one.
If we want to go broader than that, I’ve always had a soft spot for Boudicca. Sacking Londinium after Rome tried to take away your kingdom just because you don’t ascribe to patrilineal primogeniture and they do? Big mood, man.
