What do you think about the return of Horrific Visions in The War Within patch 11.1.5?
The reveal of the 2025 roadmap for World of Warcraft focused a lot of attention on the new activities in Undermine in The War Within patch 11.1 as well as the tease of player housing at the end of the timeline. There are other snippets on the roadmap that provide some idea what’s happening in the future, including another return of Turbulent Timeways next year, the update of the Brewfest and Children’s Week holidays, and the suggestion of a Remixed version of Legion coming during the Midnight prerelease interval. Then there’s one other thing worth discussing though: the line item “Horrific Visions Revisited” during patch 11.1.5.
For those who don’t remember, Horrific Visions were an instanced rogue-lite content during Battle for Azeroth. Armed with a Legendary cloak provided by Wrathion and delving into void-tainted versions of Stormwind and Orgrimmar, players could both challenge themselves and further gear up for the fight against N’zoth. The difficulty of the Horrific Visions could be increased with masks, and the more areas you were able to complete before succumbing to insanity the greater rewards you could receive.
I’ve recently had to revisit the Horrific Visions in order to pre-complete the upcoming Battle for Azeroth meta achievement and I’ll be honest it was kind of fun. Of course, anything is fun when it’s tuned for characters 30 levels below yours, but even steamrolling through the content evoked memories I hadn’t thought upon for several years now. I think I may welcome the opportunity for a new set of Horrific Visions to conquer.
Of course we should expect some changes from the prior implementation. The main one is likely the fact that it’s not releasing with the new raid; while it’s feasible the rewards will help with later progression, the fact that it’s coming with a minor patch probably means any rewards will be of the catch-up variety rather than something required for every player to complete.
There’s also the fact that solo/small group content has evolved since Battle for Azeroth. There are many takeaways from Torghast as well as the numerous group events of Dragonflight that the development team can look at when revisiting Horrific Visions. Of course the most pertinent influence will likely be Delves — while I don’t expect the removal of masks to change up the gameplay, it wouldn’t surprise me if the scaling (and potential rewards) are more granular like Delves are.
What do you think? Did you enjoy the challenge of Horrific Visions when they were first released? Did you get tired of them at the time, and if so, have you recovered yet? Are you looking forward to their return? And where do you think they’ll take place? Dornogal seems like a strong possibility, but it’s very possible the new visions will take place in other cities.
