Here’s where to watch The Game Awards and all of the other December 2024 gaming showcases
December has rapidly turned into the second most-exciting month for video game news (after June and all the shows that arrive with Summer Game Fest). The Game Awards are of course at the center of the news cycle, but its prominence has encouraged other publishers — especially Indie teams — to make time this month to give players a head start on making their gaming plans for 2025.
All of this year’s showcases have aired, meaning you can catch up on the month’s gaming news by binge-watching them all at once to enjoy this rundown of the best games of 2024, announcements for new titles coming in 2025, and plenty of heartfelt developer speeches. Here are all of the winter game showcases from this month.
The Game Awards is the premiere gaming event and as expected it was packed with AAA game trailers (and even the occasional award), including premieres for Witcher 4, Borderlands 4, and Naughty Dog’s brand new sci-fi game Intergalactic.
The Indie Game Awards is a proper awards show that focused on showcasing the best Indies of the year and the developers that made them. There are no previews of new games here (check the other shows for plenty of those), but it’s a great show for remembering the best of the year and enjoying heartfelt developer speeches.
Wholesome Snack: Wholesome Games’ shows are some of our favorites because of all the cozy indie games they feature. This season’s show was no exception, with all things cute, cozy, and calming.
Latin American Games Showcase: This showcase focuses on development teams located in Latin America, and this year’s showcase featured a lot of stylish horror games — but there’s plenty of variety here for every gamer.
Day of the Devs: Day of the Devs is a non-profit corporation formed by Double Fine Productions and iam8bit to help showcase Indie developers. The highlight of this show is always the devs talking enthusiastically about their games when introduced.
Women-Led Games Showcase highlighted Indie game studios led by women, and it ran the gamut of game genres and styles. This is the second year that Women-Led Games has been presenting during major gaming events, and we expect them to return in March 2025 with a multi-day interview and showcase event.
The Game Awards for Games Who Can’t Afford the Game Awards was a brand new event this year, and it came with a particularly low budget aesthetic that suits the name. But the show highlighted 160 great looking indie games in categories like “Best Froggo” and “Most Obedient Cultists.”
Black Voices in Gaming is less of a game showcase and more of a roundtable discussion, including interviews with developers and voice actors as well as the occasional game preview.
The Horror Game Awards celebrated the best in horror games, a genre that doesn’t always get mainstream attention. This year’s show highlighted the best of 2024, with some seriously scary indie games as well as some teasers for games that will be keeping us up at night next year.
This may not be the final list, so keep an eye on Blizzard Watch for coverage and updates.
