Celebrate the holidays in cozy comfort with all of Blizzard’s yule log videos
It’s that time of year again, when everything gets just a bit more cozy — including long, looping videos of festive fireplaces decorated with your favorite themes. These are perfect for putting on a second screen while you work, running on a TV while you perform merry holiday tasks, or even leaving up as a screensaver on your office computer for your co-workers to enjoy while you step out for lunch.
I’ve used various calming, homey, and ridiculous videos over the years (my perennial favorites are the 5-hour Darth Vader Yule Log and Nick Offerman sitting by a fire sipping whiskey). What I had not previously discovered was all of Blizzard’s game-themed yule log videos. Some are simple, some are elaborate, and some are downright goofy, but they’re all worth checking out for a little bit of extra cheer this holiday season.
World of Warcraft’s wintery music mix
Brand new for 2024, his one is a mostly static cozy fire scene, although there are periodic cameos from notable cute Azeroth denizens such as Pepe and Arfus. The soundtrack consists of the music from the snowiest zones across all of World of Warcraft, from Wintergrasp to Dun Morogh to Azure Span. I know I’m not alone when I say that I could listen to the Storm Peaks music for hours on end, so this one is likely going to end up being my go-to for the next week.
Overwatch livestream, 2017
Kicking off the brief yearly tradition of Overwatch yule log videos, in 2017 game director (at the time) Jeff Kaplan sat by a fire on stream for nine hours. The video is on Twitch, but the highlights are embedded here. You can make up your own mind about whether the boom mic headshot and telemarketer call were staged or not, but the glitched-out hero announcement at the very end was certainly nothing short of some holiday trolling.
Overwatch personalities, 2018
If you’re looking for eight hours of crackling fire ambiance with a rotating cast of Overwatch personalities sitting next to a loot box, this one’s for you. Jeff Kaplan is back to start things off, but after an hour he wants a cookie. He leaves to get some milk, allowing some of the other devs, pro players, and voice actors to take a turn sitting by the hearth. Poor Jeff returns with milk just after the seven-hour mark only to find the cookies have been eaten.
Overwatch encore, 2019
This time Jeff Kaplan is back to solo the entire eight-hour fireplace sitting session. He does open some of the presents under the tree, including a Switch which he plays for about thirty minutes and an Overwatch LEGO set that he builds over the course of two hours. There are some brief call-in cameo messages from streamers and other members of the community, but otherwise Jeff spends the bulk of the video chilling by the hearth and staring into the camera.
A murloc-themed holiday
This 53-minute video from Hearthstone starts with a bare fireplace and adds progressively more murloc paraphernalia. I am particularly fond of the three-toed stockings and the tree topped with a mushy-looking sea star. You might want to keep this one on mute if the sounds of murlocs grunting their way through traditional winter carols doesn’t fit in with your idea of a peaceful holiday season.
A festive burning pentagram
Here’s a four-hour loop from the Diablo team that delivers what it promises – a fiery scene from the caverns of hell for some calming holiday ambience. I can’t say that I watched the whole thing, but it does seem like a simple, uneventful burning symbol of demonic evil that’s perfect for reflecting on your adventures in Sanctuary.
