The Queue: I think Owlcat Games is working on a specific game

So Owlcat Games. the people who worked on Pathfinder: Kingmaker, Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, and Rogue Trader recently did an AMA talking about what they’re working on in 2025 and beyond. And because of that AMA, I have a sneaking suspicion of what big huge game license might be something they’re working on.

So why does this AMA get me all suspicious?

  • They are currently working on several games internally, one of which is a CRPG.
  • They are not working on Pathfinder, Starfinder, World of Darkness, or Warhammer Fantasy.
  • They’re also working on an Unreal Engine game that will be some kind of RPG, perhaps a third person one.
  • None of the games they’re currently working on is a unique IP.
  • They are committed to developing their games into full voice acting going forward.

What gets me about all of this stuff is that taken together, it gets interesting. Considering that the games they’re making are most likely licensed (since they aren’t unique, original IP) and none of these games are the big licenses they’ve done in the past (Two Pathfinder games and one Warhammer 40k game) you start to wonder who, exactly, has a game big enough to be one of Owlcat’s licensed IP’s. Who’s left?

Now, there are a ton of IP’s out there. There’s Shadowrun, for example. Deadlands has a pretty solid following and it’s magic cowboy stories, what’s not to like? There’s games that other companies already have, like Cyberpunk or Mechwarrior. There’s several IP’s that are open for use due to copyrights lapsing — We could get a Call of Cthulhu game. There are IP’s that aren’t limited to tabletop RPG’s like Michael Moorcock’s Elric of Melnibone/Eternal Champion saga. It’s a crowded field, is what I’m saying. But one idea keeps popping into my head.

What if Owlcat is working on the next Baldur’s Gate game?

We know that Larian isn’t going to do it, and honestly, if you wanted to replace Larian and at least have a good chance of getting a very good CRPG, Owlcat may be one of a few studios that could possibly bring as good or better a game to the table. And the few tidbits we’re getting — making at least one game in Unreal, getting up to full voice acting, and the fact that they’re even saying they’re interested in Game Pass and honestly, the D&D 5e system is the biggest tabletop RPG, and there are a host of iconic creatures in D&D that Owlcat has never managed to make use of.

So yes, this is completely unfounded speculation. But considering the information we have, we can’t rule out Owlcat Games making Baldur’s Gate 4 just yet.

JALAMENOS TALKS A LOT ABOUT EXPANSION LAUNCH EVENTS. I CUT TO THE END OF HIS LONGER COMMENT SO WE COULD TALK ABOUT IT.

So for whatever we’re getting before Midnight, I sincerely hope that they make more of an effort to
A) Make the player feel like they’re doing something that matters,
B) Make the grind feel less hopeless and more fun (it’s not just about keeping us busy with timegated slow grinds, give us a reason to care)
C) Make sure that you want other players around you, instead of fostering an air of competition in a PvE event

I think one thing that might really be interesting for a pre expansion launch event is actually to steal from Cataclysm‘s pre expansion event, and instead of running around trying to stomp  out invasions all over the world go for the idea of invading other places ourselves. One thing you could do is break out the Warfront tech from BFA and use it to represent the Alliance and Horde invading various cool and interesting places with connections to the coming expansion.

I’d like to see other folks ideas, though. How would you like to see WoW handle the launch for the next expansion?

MUSEDMOOSE

My favorite pokemon: Gyarados.

I think my favorite Pokemon is whatever that frog that wears his own tongue like a scarf wrapped around his neck is, or the sand castle one that kills and eats Pikachu.

ENO

Speaking of Greek mythology, I’m cautiously looking forward to whatever Christopher Nolan can cook up with his $250 million Odyssey movie. Hopefully it will be entertaining at least.

I mean, we just got a Odysseus movie with Ralph Fiennes and Juliet Binoche. Nolan’s gonna have to work pretty dang hard to make something I’d like more than that.

SCUNOSI

Man
Zul’Farrak is way shorter than I remember it being

I guess that’s what happens when you have a full-team (albeit 4) of seasoned gamers in voice, compared to back when I would’ve been doing this in Vanilla as a total newb and text-only.

ZF is simultaneously one of my favorite dungeons and one I loathe. I had so many groups in that place refuse to go pull specific bosses because of how several bosses are essentially optional. Heck, one needs you to complete several relatively hard quests to get a special hammer just to summon a hydra boss.

The waves of attacking mobs on the step pyramid are and will always be iconic, and one of the last fights drops one of my favorite sets of plate shoulders in WoW.

Honestly, the one dungeon I really miss is the original Sunken Temple.

MISTAH JAY AND THE SEVEN SHIPS OF SABATO

PSA:
GoG has a Dreamlist page where you can vote for what games they put into their Preservation Program and see what games are on there already.

When Blizzard announced they were pulling them from GoG, the original Warcraft 1 and 2 games got put on there

Also, Alpha Protocol is on there.

I’m amused at seeing Diablo as well as Hellfire on there.

Okay. I’m trying to fight off the mental parasites that are screaming at me about IP’s that Owlcat might be working on. Could it be a Star Trek CRPG? Maybe it’s a Black Company game!

God help me please Owlcat just tell us what they are before I go insane. More insane. You know what I mean.
