The Queue: Grin and bear it

If there’s one thing to be said about this website, it’s definitely not that we have too few puns.

This is The Queue, our daily column where you ask us the questions and we’ll give the answers just as soon as we figure out a witty turn of phrase to add.

Q4TQ: Are you changing your hunter’s pets now that you can swap specs for them?

Q4TQ: I’ve only recently started to look at games on gog. I was interested in playing Ultima IV (one of the games I have found memories of playing on an Apple ][ Plus, and I could get it through Amazon games for free.

What are people’s thoughts on gog as a gaming platform? Has anyone had any issues. I like that games can be played without a game client and with a little work I can make it work on my Steam Deck if I wish.

GOG is decent! It’s (generally) DRM free, and they do have frequent sales.

Personally I tend to prefer Steam, because I love cloud saves and simplicity in organizing more than DRM free, and when I do want DRM free I tend to look to Humble first. Also, don’t forget that certain studios force you to also have a login with their service to play the games, which for me is a major turn-off (and also takes the teeth out of the DRM-free perk).

Q4TQ: What is the appeal for people to play new video games that are done with an old school raster 8-Bit graphics to them? For me it’s a through back to my naive youth when life was simple and video games were made just for the enjoyment of the person playing it.

I tend to enjoy pixel graphics for a variety of reasons. While it does hit that nostalgia button, it’s also a bit easier on my computer fans. It also allows me a bit more flexibility in using my imagination. Pixel graphics give me a broad outline of what characters and places look like, and my brain headcanons the rest.

The other factor is that pixel graphics are a deliberate choice, and even though it’s intended to feel somewhat retro, it also simultaneously feels timeless. A lot of very stylized graphics choices are this way — it’s part of why the majority of The Long Dark aged well despite initially debuting a decade ago. It’s something you see frequently with both games and movies, where the media you remember being photo-realistic, completely indistinguishable from an actual video, has not aged as well as you’d want it to.

KALCHEUS

Wait, if the S.E.L.F.I.E. patch was 10 years ago, does that mean Ion’s been in charge longer than Ghostcrawler was?

The real mindbender is that Ghostcrawler was at Riot for just about twice as long as he was at Blizzard, and he hasn’t been at Riot for nearly 2 years.

Sands of time through the hourglass, something something.
