The Queue: Warhammer 40k Rogue Trader > Baldur’s Gate 3 please do @ me

You can also leave a comment here.

Now, keep in mind, I’m playing Warhammer 40k Rogue Trader more than a year after it was released. And it certainly loses in the comparison of graphics and animated cutscenes, with W40kRT being a more stylized game with a much darker and more grim tone than  other Isometric CRPG’s (unless you’re Planescape Torment, in which case this could be said to be stealing your bit.)

Honestly, it’s not that this game is better than BG3, so much as it is to me more enjoyable to play than that game. Maybe it’s because you get to swing a giant chainsaw sword around and set things on fire with your mind while flirting with a completely deranged psyker who enjoys screaming people to death, I don’t know. I do know that the inventory system is not what I would call good.

QftQ: After probably around midway DF, haven’t really even logged into WoW. Kinda thinking of maybe giving it a go again. The main thing holding me back atm is the UI. I know, that before I can actually start playing, I’ll have to spend a significant amount of time on different settings and Mods. After that, I guess I’ll start leveling up and just looking at how the game works as a Solo Player.

What are some things to look forward to, and to avoid, when coming back to WoW at this point in time?

I think that The War Within is pretty easy to configure your UI with minimal mods (TBH I don’t use any current UI mods) and I very much enjoyed leveling on the Isle of Dorn and in the various underground zones. With the upcoming XP buff that will last until May 20, I think it’s a very good time to come back all told.

As a solo player, I think Delves are a pretty good feature all told and I liked using them both as a means to level up faster and also as endgame solo/small group content. I’m a little sad that we’re likely going to end up with Brann all expansion, but still I think they’re fun.

Plus the Undermine content is pretty expansive and we’re getting Horrific Visions 2 Eldritch Horrrorgaloo pretty soon. All in all, it’s a good time to come back.

I just came face to face with the biggest hare I’ve ever seen.
I thought it was a deer before it started hopping away.

Hares are extremely good at giving you the stink eye.

ENO

Realized today Penny’s right hindleg is injured. Probably been two or three days, the wound has scarred over. I hate that cats never want to let you know they’re hurt, she tried to act like nothing was wrong (but I DID sense something was off). I think she’ll be ok, though.

Oh well. Tonight wasn’t a bad night weather wise but I’m letting the cats sleep indoors anyway.

Night

Yet more evidence that I am a cat. I hate admitting I’m sick, even when I obviously am.

Q4tRossiQueue: what are your thoughts on the recent genetic alteration of wolves to resemble dire wolves? Do you think this will lead to people altering other animals in an attempt to recreate dinosaurs?

Well, first off, kudos to you for phrasing. They’re not actually Dire Wolves, they’re just modern wolves with some genetic edits made. I think Hank says it better than I could — but basically the supposed Dire Wolves in this case are not Aenocyon dirus.

What they are is more complicated. Based on what Colossal is actually doing, they are either:

  • A genetically chimerical subspecies of Canis lupus with Aenocyon dirus DNA, much as some modern humans contain some Neandertal DNA but are not Neandertals.
  • An entirely new species of Canis with specific edits made by human scientists that would qualify this animal as one of the first truly new, distinct animal species created via human intervention directly into their genetic code and the expression of that code. Akin to but not the same to create a new breed of animal via selective breeding, instead doing so via direct manipulation of the animal’s genome.

Why this is a big deal even though it’s not at all the de-extinction or re-creation of an extinct animal is because it is essentially proof that a large, genetically diverse, social pack predator, and a mammal at that, can be created that is either an entirely new animal or a subspecies of an existing one.

You, dear reader, are most likely a human. Depending on your DNA, you may or may not already carry the DNA of a Neandertal and/or Denisovan, making you a naturally occurring creature similar to these ‘dire wolves’. Humans are social animals, like Wolves. Humans are pack persistence hunters, similar to wolves who are pack pursuit hunters. Humans and Wolves have proved so compatible in our lifestyles that many of us, myself included, have various kinds of Wolves that live in our homes and have already used selective breeding to customize those creatures.

In other words, we are now at the threshold of designer humans. Humans who have their DNA edited to produce specific results. Want some bigger, stronger humans? Humans with denser bones, perhaps thicker skin? Maybe put in a tapidum lucidum so they can see in the dark?

We are no longer at the this is a fun sci-fi concept stage. We are at the all we are waiting for is some biotech startup that is willing to experiment on actual humans to create chimeric humans with specific physical and perhaps even mental attributes.

Sure, people could (and are already trying) to ‘de-extinct’ Dinosaurs this way. But in the end, I’m more worried about when someone makes a designer Human with skeletal muscle hyperplasia.

That’s right, Belgian Blues but humans, and that’s just one possibility.

This is the Queue. I’m now officially done working on this night queue.
