The Queue: Feels So Bad

Sad note to start the queue on, but rest in peace Chuck Mangione. If you’re a member of an older generation and/or you were a King of the Hill fan you’ve probably heard “Feels So Good” a dozen (or a thousand) times but you owe it to yourself to listen to the full version. What a fantastic career and he’ll be sorely missed.

Many thanks to Red for holding down the fort while I was gone; I apologize if you’ve gotten used to him being your Friday queue writer but we’re back to alternating every week. At least until I take another break. But it hasn’t happened yet so let’s answer some questions!

ARTHONOS WELCOMES ME BACK WITH AN EXISTENTIAL CRISIS

Q4tQ: How upset would you be if this was the only question asked in the entire Queue?

I wouldn’t be mad, just disappointed.

RED SAVES ME FROM BEING DISAPPOINTED

Q4TQ: What have you been playing? What are you planning to play next? Which upcoming releases are you most looking forward to?

It’s been mostly MMOs for me lately, with WoW taking up a lot of time with the ceaseless chain of events these past couple months. I’ve also am getting back into Guild Wars 2 in anticipation of the expansion coming out in October. (I’ve also been playing Balatro despite claims of quitting — I’m up to 133/150 Gold Stake Jokers!)

I do want to get back to 13 Sentinels so I’m hoping that maybe August I’ll have time — patch 11.2 can’t have that much new content, right? — but worse case scenario there’s always September.

As for upcoming releases besides the GW2 expansion I’ll be getting and playing the remastered Final Fantasy Tactics at the end of September. It’s been literal decades since I’ve played the game and enjoyed the heck out of it (even if I remember nothing of the plot) so I’m looking forward to rediscovering it.

LIZ ASKS THE WRONNNNGGGG PERSON

I have so many things to play! I have a new panda to level, things to earn in collector’s bounty, I haven’t gotten all of the greedy emissary transmogs, SOMEbody keeps pushing how great Guild Wars 2 is, and I have been wanting to actually finish Baldur’s Gate 3 (having given up playing on console and bought it for Mac). But which one should I do?? I’m being pulled in too many directions!

Have you considered only getting a few hours of sleep at night because you stayed up too late playing games? It works for zzzzzz

Sorry, where was I? Oh yeah, games. When you’re feeling overwhelmed with games a good idea is to not start a new one! I would focus on finishing BG3 so you can cross it off your list. For WoW I would figure out exactly what you want from each event, find out the bare minimum required to obtain it, and then stop as soon as your done. Almost everything returns in WoW these days so if you don’t get all the Greedy Emissary outfits or maximize the reputation gains or leveling boost from the Winds of Mysterious Fortune you’ll have another chance to do so in the future so resist the FOMO.

Honestly I would save GW2 for a time when you know you’ll have a month or two of no other gaming plans because there’s a lot to take in if you’re fresh to the game.

XERIANNE ASKS A SUMMER QUESTION THAT I AM ALSO THE WRONG PERSON TO ASK

What do you take to a BBQ when you don’t know the host?

Whatever my wife tells me to pick up and bring.

RETPALLYJIL EXPOSES MY POP CULTURE BIASES

Q4tQ:

Has there ever been a movie, or song, or TV show that you disliked (even hated) and then gave it another chance and it won you over? (Smiles at The X-Files)

Is there one that you gave a second chance and still hated it? (Glares balefully at The Adventures of Baron Munchausen)

Xerianne actually mentioned my answer: Nirvana. As someone who grew up on 80s music the pop trend to grunge didn’t connect with me; I felt like it was just noise, especially Smells like Teen Spirit. It didn’t help that Weird Al Yankovic did a marvelous deconstruction parody of it. Years later though when I got into rhythm games like Elite Beat Agents, Rock Band and Guitar Hero I started noticing smaller details in music I listened to and I became very impressed with the musicianship of Nirvana; Heart Shaped Box is probably my favorite song of theirs.

In terms of giving second chances and still disliking I’ve gotta go with Missing You by John Waite and later Tina Turner. It’s one of the most popular songs of the 80s and even the Queen of Rock and Roll couldn’t salvage it for me.

RED ASKS AN EASY ONE

Q4Kal: who’s your favorite fictional dwarf?

But seriously it’s a tough question. Dwarves in most media feel like copy-pastes of one another and subtlety of characterization is often missing — look at Disney, where Snow White encounters seven dwarves whose names are literally a solo aspect of their personality. Even Tolkien falls prey to this in the Hobbit where Bombur is simply the fat one.

World of Warcraft does a better job, of course, because it’s an evolving story. While I’ve always been a huge Magni fan the reality is that he and Muradin are practically carbon copies in terms of personalities. That’s why I’m extremely fond of the ongoing Moira reclamation project and am intrigued by Dagran’s current characterization. Hopefully those don’t get messed up.

MUSEDMOOSE ASKS A FOODIE QUESTION

What’s your favorite type of cookie?

The ones in front of me. My cookie choice is very mood based, because sometimes I want a chewy sugar cookie and sometimes I want a rock-hard oatmeal raisin cookie. I think if I could only have cookie though I’d go with white chocolate macadamia.

ARTHONOS MAKES ME DO SOME GAMING RESEARCH

Q4tQ: If you could have two different Metroid power ups in real life, what would you choose for your work life vs personal time?

Does the Zero Suit count? Because I bet I could rock it, heels and all.

I think my answer for both scenarios though is the Scan Visor; I think it could help me solve a lot of issues in my day-to-day life.

RETPALLYJIL IS LOOKING FOR SOME FASHION ADVICE

Q4tQ:

Should I make Petra a high-res mog set or stay with her classic look?

Why not mix it up? Start with her classic look and add a couple high-res elements like a shoulder piece or cape. That way it’s like a visible representation of the progress she’s making in her life!

That’s all the time we have for questions! Have a great weekend, take some time to relax and listen to music, and leave plenty of questions for Cory who if we’re lucky will use Feels So Good at the earworm! Wait
