The Queue: Baby Hyena

Look at this cute baby hyena. Look at it.

This is The Queue, where we spend our vacations looking at animals both cool and cute, and then we talk about them. This is the life!

KALCHEUS THE ELEPHANT

Q4tQ What was the highlight of your most recent vacation?

The animals! Getting to go to a real safari (Kruger National Park in South Africa) was absolutely amazing. Managed to see four of the “Big Five” mammals — lion, rhino, elephant, and buffalo. Only the leopard eluded me!

I also had a blast visiting a chocobo an ostrich farm, seeing those super interesting animals, and getting the chance to hold a baby chocobo ostrich in my hands.

Saw wild dogs chasing a guinea fowl (a rare sight, apparently!), boars fighting for food, and both lions and ostriches engaging in some NSFW baby-making. Speaking of babies, I also saw a baby hyena from very close, and it was super cute. Saw some really pretty red-winged starlings — dark blue (almost black) but with just a few bright-colored orange/red feathers on the wings. Beautiful birds!

But besides all of those animals, I also saw some truly fantastic sights, like The Three Rondavels (one of the most breathtaking places I’ve ever been to), great cities like Cape Town, and learned a lot of the South African story (the original peoples like the Khoisan and Xhosa, Bantu, Zulu, and others who still shape much of the country’s culture; the “Boer Voortrekkers” Dutch pioneers, and the British seizing; Mandela and the Apartheid, etc).

It really was a very worthwhile trip, on all accounts.

ARTHONOS THE LION

Q4tQ: What video game franchise would you like to see get a movie adaptation? All this talk this week about what didn’t work for the Warcraft movie, versus what did work for the Mario or Minecraft movie has me wondering what approach would work best for different franchise.

BioShock! And the sequel could be BioShock Infinite!

Those seem “short” enough that you could fit their stories into a movie. They have cool twists near the end that most gamers are probably familiar with (especially for BioShock 1), but would probably be good hits for movie audiences that are more casual about gaming (or not gamers).

It’s dangerous to go alone! Take this.

MOVEWOW THE LEOPARD

Q4TQ: With the year being almost done that means there’s less than 100 shopping days until Christmas. Have you starting buying any gifts for Christmas gifts for people yet? I haven’t so far. I usually start just before Thanksgiving when the sells start to appear.

Absolutely not. Not even close to start thinking about this yet!

I usually only buy Christmas gifts for my close family (mom, dad, sis, the creature niece), but I only start doing it in, like, early-to-mid December or so.

HIGH DENSITY WAFFLE THE RHINO

Hotdog/fries vs burger/fries

I’m definitely more of a burger guy. Hotdogs can be good, but in moderation.

BOVEN WHITEHOOF THE BUFFALO

Why the heck did the Blood Elves put the toilet right out in the open?

Pick one:

  1. To assert dominance, obviously. A man poops while looking you straight in the eye, you know they’re bad news.
  2. Look, they used to have this big fel magic addiction problem. It wasn’t pretty. Mistakes were made, regrets were had all around. It was an ugly time in their beautiful history. The toilets are a reminder. A memorial, so past oversights can be avoided moving forward.
  3. The truth is that Blood Elves don’t “poop” the conventional way, like most animals do. They sit down, close their eyes, make a buzzing sound with their lips, and the stuff just disappears from their system, magically. They don’t consider that act something “dirty” or “shameful” like Humans do; they celebrate the moment in public displays of ritualistic evacuation, shared with family, friends, and loved ones.

One of these is true, I’m sure of it.

I saw these elephants shielding a baby elephant from the sun. They all stood together circling the little guy, who rested in the shade, lying on its side with its little (big) paws up. Sadly I couldn’t snap a picture (like I did the baby hyena).

This has been The Queue! Ask plenty of questions, and take care!
