Enjoy eight years of Fiona the hippo and friends embracing their HallZooween treats at the Cincinnati Zoo
Friends, it’s essential to enjoy your seasonal favorites as the days grow shorter and the weather grows colder. Fall means making time for things like apple cider, trick-or-treating, and Halloween with our favorite hippo queen, Fiona. Let’s peruse the years of Fiona (and some of her Cincinnati zoo friends) enjoying a seasonal treat of pumpkins to battle the ever-present Monday blahs.
2017
It’s Fiona’s first Halloween! Baby Fiona (not even a year old at this point!) gets her first taste of pumpkin. Hippo magic starts at 1:22, but head to 1:45 for Fiona’s adorable little chomps.
2018
Fiona is front and center in this year’s HallZooween kick0ff, as it should be. Her little chomps as she receives a piece of already-broken pumpkin are just too precious. For a bonus, check out her enjoying a Halloween day pumpkin treat (with a bit of an oops as she slips into the water).
2019
Okay, I suppose the animals getting pumpkins to kick off HallZooween means all animals, not just Fiona. At least it’s a baby cheetah stealing the show — those things are absolutely adorable.
2020
Fiona is almost an “adult” at this point, and this is where you can start to distinguish her by her shorter nose and more lighter markings on her face. She’s definitely gunning for those carved pumpkins, knocking them into the water for later enjoyment.
2021
Adult Fiona is right up there, getting a pumpkin with (presumably) mom Bibi, and while her pumpkin is still a little smaller, she has no problems smashing it to bits. Enjoy some extra footage shared a few weeks later for National Pumpkin Day.
2022
Our first YouTube short is of Queen Fi in pursuit of the pitched pumpkin! At the very end you can catch Fiona’s new baby brother Fritz, born that August. Please enjoy this clip (uploaded a few days prior to pumpkin day) of Fiona nosing at Fritz, who shortly after falls into the pool with her.
2023
Fiona remains front and center for her annual pumpkin treats as the first to knock one into the water. Fast-forward to 0:40 where she does it again, then pursues the pumpkin ever-so-elegantly in the water.
2024
Yes, this is another YouTube Short and not a regular video. But, we’re pretty sure it’s Fiona who had to be first in line for chowing down, so we had to share.
So far, the zoo’s 2025 pumpkin-focused YouTube uploads have featured Asian Small-clawed Otters receiving pumpkin enrichment, but not our floaty queen. That said, Good Morning America banded together with the zoo to ensure our beloved bloat got some pumpkin time with Fritz and Fiona stealing both the show and hearts.
