Want to scare yourself with a game on Halloween? We have a few offbeat suggestions.
It’s Halloween, so that means it’s both the peak and the end of Spooky Season, so today I’m going to highlight a couple neat spooky games that are currently on sale and worth your time. Today we’re highlighting DEAD LETTER DEPT., Home Safety Hotline, Mortal Sin, and a special bundle offered by Humble.
DEAD LETTER DEPT.
You’ve moved to the Big City and gotten yourself a job doing data entry — OH THE HORROR! Wait that’s not the spooky part; no, you’ve taken this job just until something better comes along… we all know how that goes. Your job? To look at letters that couldn’t be read by the computer, and you fill out what you see. Sometimes that mail is a little odd, either mangled or twisted, lost on its journey… while others feel like they’re directed to you. Try not to think too hard about it, okay?
Get DEAD LETTER DEPT. for $12 on Steam.
Home Safety Hotline
Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: you’ve picked up a job to pay the bills, and this time around you’re answering calls for a company that provides a safety service for homeowners. Some of the calls coming in are your usual requests: there’s mice in the walls, a bad fuse causing lights to flicker, or maybe there’s just a raccoon in the attic. Sometimes though, the calls are less normal — you’re pretty sure the last call was dealing with a goblin, and the current call you’re on seems like it’s dealing with poltergeists? That certainly can’t be right.
Snag the Deluxe Edition so you get the DLC campaign too. The soundtrack for this game is awesome, so that’s just an extra bonus.

Mortal Sin
No more basic jobs this time around! Mortal Sin is what happens when you take the Boomer Shooter genre of games like the original DOOM, and give it random quests, procedural generation, hundreds of hand-crafted rooms and fighting arenas, then tack on a class system and turn it into a roguelike. In Mortal Sin, the name of the game is to be aggressive: never give your enemy the chance to breathe and constantly be moving, constantly be slaying. After all, it’s either you or them.
As a neat side note, Mortal Sin has one of the neatest visual style editors I have seen in an indie game with multiple color modes, the ability to change the amount of blur and blood with a slider, and much, much more.

Humble Bundle: Indie Fears Bundle
Humble Bundle has dropped an amazing indie horror game bundle for a grand total of $13, which is being headlined by the indie horror darling Mouthwashing. You might remember this title getting some press earlier this year in response to the censorship going on across the globe in regards to the internet, where Itch.io took the game down from their store. Well, this bundle not only gets you a copy of Mouthwashing, but also Buckshot Roulette, Arctic Eggs, Who’s Lila?, Threshold, Order 13, No-Skin, Kiosk, Adios, The Boba Teashop, Daemonologie, Massacre at the Mirage, and Terror at Oakheart all for the cost of buying Mouthwashing by itself on Steam. According to the reviews on Reddit, a good chunk of this bundle are awesome hidden gem indie games, so give it a shot!
