The Queue: Thanksgiving Leftovers

As Thursday was an American holiday I was all prepared to dig through the last several queues to find questions in what I presumed would be a slow question day. Instead I’m seeing a lot of good questions! I’m not complaining but presume the title is referring to food not what I originally intended for this intro.

That said I’m going to reach back a little bit for the first question …

CORY ASKED A QUESTION WEEKS AGO THAT I’M FINALLY GETTING AROUND TO ANSWER

Q4tQ: in honour of Canadian Thanksgiving, what is your go-to Thanksgiving meal? Are you a traditional turkey/stuffing/potatoes family? Do you get weird with things?

We are very traditional. We get turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, sweet potato casserole, etc. We did add Macaroni & Cheese to our Thanksgiving meal many years ago because it was the only food my kid was interested in back then*, but thankfully it’s actually traditional in the southern US so we’ve kept it in the rotation.

*Who am I kidding? He’s home from college and his plate was 90% mac & cheese.

I THINK WE SHOULD START CALLING HIM MUSEDMOUSSE. MOUSSEDMOOSE? WE’LL WORKSHOP IT.

Q4tQ: what are your day-after-Thanksgiving plans? (My apologies to everyone who has to answer “work”.)

I’m baking this chocolate mousse cake . It’s a complex recipe, which is why I’ve waited until I had a full day off with no other plans to make it.

By the time this article is published the family will be watching Zootopia 2 at the local cinema.

We don’t do early morning Black Friday shopping anymore — it’s kinda pointless since most places put stuff on sale a week ago — but we do like to run out to stores like Target in the evening when they’re less crowded and see if there’s anything good left on the ravaged shelves.

RETPALLYJIL IS LOOKING TOWARDS THE NEXT MAJOR HOLIDAY

Q4tQ:

If Christmas is your thing, what are the absolutely indispensable decor items you MUST have displayed?

I ask this because, since it will be the first time ever that I won’t be in Michigan for the week of Christmas, I am paring down my home decor this year.

BUT – I bought a little 3ft tree, because I’m not NOT having a tree, and I put out my very bedraggled circa 1970 Christmas card basket and the almost-as-bedraggled wreath-made-from-computer-punch-cards that my brother made in 1st grade and has had the place of honor ever since. But I no longer have a storm door to protect it, so it has moved to the interior door to the garage, so it is highly visible inside.

Now for the Nativity with Two Marys (note to self, buy new fake hay) and then my globe lights for the front window.

I think that should be holly-jolly enough to get me through!

That sounds very holly-jolly!

We have done “bare minimum” Christmas decorating in the past when we weren’t planning on being home, but that basically means we don’t decorate our tree with ornaments. Most of our standard lights and garlands in the house still get displayed, and we put up different wreaths on our front door all year long so we switch to a Christmas wreath right about now. We also hang up our stockings over the fireplace.

I also have a pre-decorated small Christmas tree I picked up from Michael’s or JoAnns years ago that I keep in my office and put out for the season. So I guess I would say that I personally require a tree of some sort.

RED ASKS A QUESTION APPROPRIATE FOR A COLUMN TITLED ‘THANKSGIVING LEFTOVERS’

Q4TQ what’s your favorite ice cream flavor?
what’s your favorite sandwich?
would you eat them together?

Favorite ice cream flavor is kind of hard to answer because most of my favorites include mixed in toppings — like raspberry with chocolate chips, or vanilla with cookie dough. In terms of just flavor though I’d probably have to go with maple.

Assuming that a hot dog isn’t a sandwich, my favorite sandwich is the traditional Italian sub with all the toppings.

… I would not eat them together.

TELWAR KEEPS THE FOOD CONVERSATION GOING

QftTurkeyQ:

Is it stuffing, or dressing?

Technically if it’s not cooked inside the bird it’s dressing not stuffing. But the reality is this: stuffing cooked within the bird is a super bad idea — either you overcook the bird and it’s not tasty, or you undercook the stuffing and risk illness. So it seems as an etymological compromise most areas call it stuffing despite not actually being so.

I prefer to call it stuffing because dressing makes me think of ranch being poured on salad.

LIZ ASKS A QUESTION THAT ACTUALLY INVOLVES VIDEO GAMES!

What piece of decor will you chase down first when Player Housing launches?

I’ve already earned the central piece of my decor plans: the Vrykul’s Lord Throne rewarded by getting exalted with the Valarjar in ReLegion. It sounds like we won’t be getting it until the following week, tho, so my place is going to feel bare the first week. I will try to see if I can get a fireplace working though while I wait.

OK, LET’S GRAB SOME LEFTOVERS FROM EARLIER QUEUES. OOH HERE IS A GOOD ONE FROM TELWAR

QftQ: Is there a decent walking stick looking polearm? Paladins can’t use staves, and it bothers me to have my Ashbringer out in town (…which is one of the reasons I’m actually looking forward to the transmog changes).

High Density Waffle provided an excellent answer with the Expeditionary Quarterstaff/Recruit’s Sturdy Polearm which are available either in Exile’s Reach if you level a Hunter, Monk or Druid or from a quartermaster in your faction capital. If you want to go a little more stylish there’s the Archaic Longspear but that’s considerably tougher or more expensive to obtain, or the similar-but-slightly-more-garish Abandoned Spear which is easier to find.

There are also numerous thin-blade spears that would look a lot less violent in public than a sword would — I like the Gargoyle’s Bite colors, but something like the Minuteman Pike could work too if you don’t mind a little sharpness at the end of your stick.

All that said, I found an actual polearm walking stick: the Worgen Training Stick! If you don’t already have it unlocked you should be able to get it with less than 10 minutes of leveling a Forsaken.

Q4tQ: Sega is saying certain low sales numbers are because gamers aren’t buying games on release and instead waiting for the definitive version to release. They cited Persona Golden and Royal as to why sales of Metaphor dropped off a cliff. Thoughts?

They’re 100% correct and it’s 100% entirely their fault. It’s not the fact that there will eventually be collected editions that gives you the base game and any DLC; the problem is that Persona 4 Golden and Person 5 Royal interwove the additional content in the base so the only way to see it was to play the whole game again from scratch — oh and you also have to buy an entire new game at full price. It’s not a surprise that this would dissuade potential players of Metaphor Re:Fantazio or the unannounced but definitely coming someday Persona 6.

Have they learned their lesson? We’ll have to see if Persona 4 Revival incorporates the Golden additions right off the back. If not Sega/Atlus should expect P4R to drop off a similar cliff.

That’s all the space and time we have for questions today! I hope you had an excellent Thanksgiving if you celebrate otherwise I hope your Thursday was awesome. Have a great weekend, stay hydrated and despite the chill in the northern hemisphere try to get yourself some time outside.
