The Queue: The End and the Death

It took me three years, but I did it; I read every book and short story anthology in the Warhammer Horus Heresy and Siege of Terra series. All 67 of them, and boy, are my eyes tired.

First off, shout out to my local library and its ereader app for letting me read all of the books legally and for free. That really helped on the wallet front. Second, I’m going to miss the series. I’ve been reading it for so long that now it’s going to be weird reading anything else. Maybe I’ll ease myself back into non-Warhammer stuff by making a stopover in the Alien novels.

I’m glad I was able to stick with it and read all of them. I’d tried to get through the series as they were first coming out, but having to wait a long time between novels was tough. I love the big over-the-top shooty sci-fi of it all, and getting so many books to watch characters grow and evolve was a fun time. I liked knowing the gist of the ending and seeing how everything lined up to get there, especially at the end, as so many narrative throughlines started getting their payoffs, or their set-ups for Warhammer 40,000 stuff.

While I go sit on a golden throne couch and think about everything that brought me to this point, it’s time for our daily question and answer column — The Queue!

THAT’S GREAT IT STARTS WITH AN RED, BIRDS AND SNAKES AN AEROPLANE

It’s a culinary battle out here, and Two Bosses Enter the arena: “Hemborger Steak,” a delicious beef patty served with eggs, vegetables, and a rich sauce faces off against “Yakisoba Pan,” a hot dog bun filled with noodles, pork belly, and yakisoba sauce. Who wins? Who loses? What’s the ultimate dish?!

The Yakisoba Pan.

C’mon, this is such an easy decision, you might as well have been asking if you’d rather eat a piece of delicious cake or a stale brownie that fell behind the fridge. Gimme the noodly hot dog any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Hamburger steaks have never been a favorite of mine and maybe that’s coloring my reaction a bit, but still, pork belly is way tastier in every form.

MUSEDMOOSE IS NOT AFRAID

Q4tQ, based on Kal’s comment below: what games do you play that make you want to play other games?

Octopath Traveler 0 is making me want to play a Persona game just a little, as while OT0 has some inter-party conversation scenes and I like them, they’re a far cry from anything in the Persona series when it comes to story and character development. And pretty much anything with a red demon-type will make me want to play BG3 because Karlach.

My roommate has been playing the Assassin’s Creed set in Japan recently, and that’s just making me want to play an open-world game of my own. I just don’t know which one… I don’t want to play the same one he’s playing, since I’ve seen too much of the opening and stuff he’s been doing, and it’ll feel too same-y. But that doesn’t help me choose what I do want to do.

I also know that open-world games are too easy to get distracted in and then never finish. I get too bogged down in the urge to cross every cave, fort, treasure, and point of interest off the map, which means I spend a lot of time in it, and by the end, I can be looking for something else to do.

At least with racing games, I know that any racing game I play is just going to make me want to play Burnout Revenge again. That was always my favorite, partially because of the soundtrack, partially because it had a button that would explode your car after an accident, and if you caught the person who made you crash in that explosion, you got a bigger boost bar. That’s just the kind of racing I wanna see in real life!

EYE OF A KALCHEUS, LISTEN TO YOURSELF CHURN WORLD SERVES ITS OWN NEEDS, DON’T MISSERVE YOUR OWN NEEDS

Q4tQ I’m on my own for dinner tonight. What should I get?

Sounds like the perfect opportunity for a big bowl of ramen!

This is in no way influenced by just coming from getting a big bowl of ramen with my favoritest person in the world.

Alternatively, get a pizza with something weird on it. Not like super weird, but out of your usual ordering sphere. Take that risk, maybe you’ve hit upon the next great taste combination, or maybe you’ll have a funny story and some leftovers to inflict share with other people.

IT’S THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT AND KALCHEUS FEELS FINE

Sportsball: go Panthers!

War were declared.

I don’t even care that these aren’t the Florida Panthers you’re cheering for! This is an anti-panther zone through and through.

ARTHONOS OFFER ME SOLUTIONS, OFFER ME ALTERNATIVES AND I DECLINE

Q4tQ: What sort of RPG party dynamics do you prefer: a limited roster of characters, but you can always have everyone in your party, or an expansive roster of characters that lets you choose your own party, but this means you have to bench some that you might like.

I don’t mind the bigger cast of characters, as long as they all get power at the same rate. It’s really annoying to be forced into a dedicated team because everyone else is too weak to hang in the main squad. Sure, sometimes you’ll miss out on some banter, but that’s a small price to pay for choices.

Unless you’re forced into picking people to fill out gaps in things like lockpicking, so that you can get into all of those tempting, tempting locked rooms and boxes. There’s nothing I hate more than missing a skill check and not getting to ransack everything. Why even get out of bed in the morning if you can’t take everything that isn’t nailed down?

Coincidentally, this is why I always did poorly playing Skyrim and Fallout — encumberance forced me to leave too many things behind.

Bacardi is keeping his eyes on you, closely. Don’t disappoint him this week, and you can expect to be handsomely rewarded. However, we still haven’t found the remains from the last person who let him down…
