The Queue: It’s Friday the 13th

I don’t believe in witches, but if they fly, they fly.

This is an extra-spooky Friday the 13th edition of The Queue, our daily Q&A where you ask us scary questions and we give you frightening answers. Hopefully. Probably. Look, scaring people is hard.

BOO!

BUNDTCAKE

Q4TheQueue: Given the latest Diablo anniversary reveal, who do you think would out-curse the others in a fight: The D2 Resurrected Warlock, The D3 Witch Doctor, or the WoW Affliction Warlock? Curse meaning either actual spells, foul language, or both.

I’m going with the Witch Doctor on this one.

The truth is that the jungles of Nahantu are tough. Sanctuary is a harsh place in general, with its slight demon problem and some pretty unpleasant angels as well, but having to deal with all of that and foul dark magic in the air in addition to the plethora of ways nature itself can kill you? Venomous snakes, poisonous plants, feral predators, bloodthirsty piranhas and what-have-you? Yeah, Witch Doctors have to be pretty hardcore to make it into that environment.

Meanwhile, you have Warlocks (on either game) idling in their towers or basements, and reading tomes. That’s not harsh! That doesn’t breed character! They only dabble with evil, while Witch Doctors survive it every single day!

Besides, incinerating your foes with flaming toads is pretty cool.

HIGH DENSITY WAFFLE

If you were forced to die without leaving a corpse but could not use fire, what would you do?

Get eaten by flaming toads.

JALAMENOS

Where is Nomi and don’t you think it’s suspicious that we haven’t heard of him since before Teldrassil burned?

Last I heard, he had ventured to Suramar to perfect this new flaming toads recipe he picked up from Valtrois. It’s a real fancy Nightborne delicacy served in fancy dinners — with or without attendance by Legion overlords!

XERIANNE

Freddy vs Jason vs Michael?

I grew up with Jason being a more predominant figure in the zeitgeist, but in the end I have to give it to Freddy. He’s a classic, and seems to have more widespread reach in popular culture overall.

The idea that you can’t escape evil because it will find you in your dreams, where you’re completely powerless, brings a pretty interesting angle to horror. Feels more terrifying than just running away form a guy with a knife!

KALCHEUS

Q4tQ With so much of Midnight focused on the void do you think any of the “dead” old gods will make an appearance?

Last week I talked about how we don’t know who (or what) will succeed Xal’atath as the next big bad antagonist. The idea of a “dead” Old God entering the picture is actually an excellent notion! I understand that Xal might not actually be aligned with the Old Gods, but she’s certainly not above using them for her own purposes.

Shadow Magic in WoW has always had a “mind control” connotation. I think it would be extremely badass if Xal resurrected and fully controlled an Old God like Yogg, or perhaps even Y’shaarj, somehow, unleashing him against us. This could even supersede Xal herself as a dignified final boss for Midnight; I’d be on board.

And then, from the fallout of that fight, enough Death magic is liberated that Iridikron finally has what it takes to resurrect Galakrond. Bang: we segue straight into The Last Titan.

MUSEDMOOSE

What would you do if you found out that fictional-style eldritch horrors actually existed? Could be at any level, from human-sized cryptids to massive unfathomable entities.

After I had a major panic attack and changed my underpants, I’d probably feel compelled to pray for the existence of benevolent beings opposed to those eldritch entities, and for those benevolent beings to decide to intervene in our favor.

Not like I could do anything else about it myself — our powerlessness before them is the whole point of cosmic horror!

ELIZABETH HARPER

What is your favorite spooky video game to play on Fridays the 13th?

I don’t do a lot of spooky games, honestly, so I just have to go with Vampire Survivors.

Ask me again after the new Castlevania, which got announced yesterday and looks fantastic, is out!

DISHSOAP

QfortheQueue:

what is the spookiest/creepiest unexplained thing you’ve seen or has happened to you?

Even if you don’t believe in any of that stuff, even if you might have come up with an explanation since, give us your best!

When I was little, like eight or nine, one night I was in bed and I was convinced that I left my body for a few moments, “floated” above it, looked down and saw myself sleeping. Astral projection, is that what they call it?

Of course, it must have been a dream or similar sort of phenomenon. But I remember it feeling super real, being absolutely certain that that had really happened, and telling people about it with full confidence.

MOVEOVER

What do people find spooky about Friday the 13th? It seems like any other day of the week 13th.

Maybe you’re right, and everyone’s simply in the pocket of Big Witch!

This has been The Queue. We hope you have a phantasmagorical Friday, but try to find a black cat for luck. That’s right: black cats bring good luck, actually! It is known.

Flaming toads.
