The Queue: Still don’t know what I’m playing in Midnight edition

It’s been a whole 24 hours, and I’m still in the same boat. What am I going to play in Midnight? Nobody knows, least of all me.

But let’s get to the Queue, our daily Q&A column where we do our best to answer your questions. To the comments!

KALCHEUS ASKED:

Q4tQ Do you think we’ll get the Amani as a new customization for trolls?

I think Blizzard has been really good about backfilling new appearances as they’ve rolled out new types of characters in game, though they don’t always do it quickly. Maybe in a .5 patch sometime this year?

RUKA SAID:

I’m surprised at how many people just roll with whatever talent build Wowhead suggests. Different writers/sites end up with different builds because your playstyle impacts what you “should” take. Almost no one is going to play exactly like the world-first mythic raider, and it’s proven detrimental not to lean into your own strengths and style instead.

I’d also say that Blizz has done a better job than ever (though far from perfect) at balancing a lot of your choices.

Perfect example is last I checked you might be able to squeeze out a slight increase in Frost Mage DPS by not taking the water elemental.

Anecdotally, I’ve not been beaten by any other Shadow Priests in DPS despite taking the technically-less-optimal hero tree, and by picking my own talents.

It’s another thing to run as a test, or if time is tight, or an alt you don’t care about of course.

Class trees can be pretty complicated, and everyone needs a place to start. That place is usually going to be a pre-made build from Wowhead or Icy Veins, which is made by people who have probably done the theorycrafting to try to find the most a build can do.

That doesn’t mean they’re perfect or that the theorycrafting is always correct or that the build has been updated since the last round of class balance hotfixes. But some people are going to be happy with that, to have something that works and they don’t have to do a lot of heavy lifting on figuring out the intricacies of their talents. Sometimes you just want to play a game, you know? Having builds like this lets people just jump in and play if that’s what they want to do.

But I usually think of them as a starting point. As you play a class more, you may figure out something that works better for you. You may really want some extra bit of utility that a maximum DPS build doesn’t pick up. You may want more solo friendly talents, like CC or speed boosts. You may realize that you just aren’t playing the way the build encourages you to play, and you want to do buff different abilities. The more into a class you are, I think, the more interested you’re likely to be in tweaking your build to fit what you’re doing better.

But not everybody is interested in that kind of gameplay, though, and it’s good for them to have easy ways to get in the game and play.

LIZ ASKED:

What are your top three spec/class combos that you’re considering?

I have a pretty strong top two but after that things are murkier.

  1. Warlock, currently demonology but I like all three specs for different reasons and most of them seem pretty strong. Just a fun class with three really well-defined DPS specs that let you mix things up while staying in the same role.  Also my Warlock is presently a vulpera and she’s very adorable.
  2. Death Knight, currently frost but unholy also seems to be in a great spot. I love the Rider of the Apocalypse hero talents, which gives the class a good speed boost and some great flavor.

As to what else is on the list, well, I have thought about continuing on with Monk but I’m pretty bummed by the state of the class now that it’s pared down. It would be the easiest thing to do, though. I’ve really been enjoying Warrior, but mostly just like playing fury so that’s a class where I could get pigeonholed with just a single spec to play. Demon Hunter was high up the list because I thought devourers sounded so cool, but they sounded cooler than they feel to play, so I think it’s off the charts. And this feels like THE expansion to play a Paladin but I just don’t have fun playing ret.

So here I am, paralyzed by indecision.

ANNA ASKED:

specs are well and good but which class has the best transmog???

Mage, but my Mage happens to be a Void Elf and they’re just op.

But Mages have had some great sets, cloth has a lot of variety, and if they ever need more looks they can teleport all over Azeroth in seconds to acquire them. No one else stood a chance.

KALCHEUS ASKED:

Q4tQ Have you added any last minutes to-dos for The War Within?

I have been working on finishing Flame’s Radiance reputation, but not all that hard. I also hit a point where I just stopped bothering with K’aresh reputation, which I could finish without a lot of work. Both would be nice to cross off the list, though.

But frankly I’m sitting here stuck on the whole what to play thing. If I have a priority, figuring out what I’m actually doing is top of the list.

That’s all for today, my friends. Take care, have a good Thursday, and I’ll see you back here next week.
