What would you want from a brand new World of Warcraft mobile game?

In recent interviews and public chats with the player community, Executive Producer and Vice President Holly Longdale has mentioned that she feels World of Warcraft is underutilized and could be expanded into other media. While there are already quite a few spinoffs and past questionable forays into other areas, it’s always fun to speculate on what else might be in the works and what other versions of Azeroth we’d like to see.

A mobile game seems like a fairly big and obvious target for Blizzard to tackle soon if they are looking to widen the impact of World of Warcraft. If you pick a random human on the planet Earth, the chances are pretty close to 50-50 that they have played a mobile game at some point.

You might remember a past WoW app that allowed existing players to accomplish some in-game tasks from their phone (mission table assignments, auction house management, etc.) but let’s imagine that we are getting a brand-new standalone game set on Azeroth. What would your perfect version of that look like?

Maybe you’re a Pokémon Go veteran and you’d love some sort of battle pet system resurrection in the form of an augmented reality catch-’em-all game. Come to think of it, maybe that’s why battles are being phased out in Midnight: to move that aspect of WoW to a mobile game! Perhaps something more along the lines of Diablo: Immortal would be more your cup of tea: a stripped-down version of retail World of Warcraft that explores some small part of the world.

Personally, I’m always on the lookout for an engaging low-key system management mobile game where my progress continues while I’m offline. I like to wake up and find that my fleet of spaceships have maxed out on ore while I slept, and then decide how to upgrade my ships using that ore so that I can go get better ore.

Imagine this: Blizzard announces that the next two Player Housing locations have been selected, but the sites need quite a bit of work done before we can start laying the foundations of our personal homes. They announce a mobile game where players need to clear and level plots, establish crops and livestock, and build the bridges and other infrastructure that was ready and waiting for us in Founder’s Point and Razorwind Shores.

Once the entire playerbase hits some cumulative goal, then the two new zones immediately go live in World of Warcraft. The mobile game could continue on in the same vein of supporting the logistics of visiting Endeavor groups and ongoing infrastructure maintenance.

To be totally honest, I’d settle for any kind of mobile Azeroth experience that wasn’t a slapped-together cash grab. If expanding the IP’s presence would lead to a pointless microtransaction treadmill, I’d rather World of Warcraft just stayed out of the mobile gaming sphere entirely.

So what kind of mobile game category would you most want to see? If you could pitch Blizzard an idea for an on-the-go spinoff, what would it sound like?
