World Bosses will reside in their own instanced Lairs in Midnight patch 12.1
We’ll be headed off the coast of Zul’Aman to The Coiled Isle for Midnight’s patch 12.1, and one of the tweaks to perennial content is how we will interact with World Bosses. Here’s everything we know about what’s different with these powerful free-roaming monsters.
Rather than hanging out in the open world as they have for the past few expansions, World Bosses can now be found in their own instances called Lairs. Summoning Stones will be found outside Lairs so you can whisk your party members to the Lair instantly, and you’ll be able to set the difficulty of the encounter to World, Normal, Heroic, and Mythic. It’s confirmed that the Mythic difficulty will include the flex option to scale for 15-25 players.
If this all sounds familiar, then you might be like me in initially wondering if a Lair is simply a label slapped onto this cycle’s single-boss raid. All we have to go on at this time is the initial shallow overview from Blizzard, which does not call out any differences. It’s just an educated guess, but it makes sense that Lairs and raids will continue to feel distinct. I think we’ll see World Bosses continuing the pattern of being lower-challenge shorter-commitment end game content compared to single-boss raids. I expect less mechanics and a smaller health pool for World Bosses compared to co-releasing raid tiers.
For those curious about why these changes were made, I can see three main benefits of tucking World Bosses into their own instances. The scaling difficulty may mean the boss stays relevant longer into the gearing-up grind. Being able to summon party members is a big advantage to waiting for a dozen people to fly from Silvermoon City. By far the most impactful change is that moving these encounters to their own instance means that lag during World Boss fights should be much more manageable than it is currently.
The World Boss that we’ll be facing off with on The Coiled Isle is the Naga sorceress Nymrissa Wavecaller. We’ll find her within the Tidebound Grotto, and the only other information we have is that the entrance to this Lair seems to be underwater. Stay tuned for more info as we learn more about facing off against the powerful denizens of Azeroth’s Lairs.
