Hearthstone’s Darkmoon Faire gacha returns with no pet or skin this time, but a lot of Signature Cards
A while ago, Hearthstone introduced pets, that could only be obtained by playing a gacha-style roulette game with terrible, terrible odds — which meant that, realistically, they ended up costing up to $158. There were a few months where things were even worse: we once had two top prizes at the same time, a Hogger Pet and a Mythic Varian skin, which made the maximum (and likely) cost go up to as much $200. This month, though, we have no pets or skins, but several Signature Cards, with the top prize being a set of three Signature Legendaries.
You can read the full details on our previous post, but the gist of the Darkmoon Faire roulette is that it’s a gacha-style roulette with several possible prizes, and your first roll is free. But the chances of getting the top-tier item on that single free roll are microscopically low (around 0.1%), and they increase by absolutely measly amounts with each new roll. At the same time, each roll costs proportionally more than the previous. By the time you’ve already purchased nine rolls and there are only two prizes left, you’d think your chances to get the pet would be at around 50%, right? Wrong: they’re still at a diabolical 6.67%.
The only way to guarantee you’ll get the top prize is to purchase all ten rolls, so you’ll obtain every item on the roulette. This time, since the prize is a bit less prestigious than exclusive pets or Mythic skins, the total Runestone cost to guarantee you’ll get all ten rewards is going to be a ludicrous 11,000, which equates to $110. That’s lower than $158 or $200, but still very, very high.
Every time we get an update to the Darkmoon Faire and I write about the new prizes, the ridiculousness of the situation dawns on me again, and it makes me feel like I’m a part of some sort of social experiment. But I keep running into players who have those pets and skins on ladder, which means that there are people buying them despite the extremely greedy prices — which means Blizzard isn’t likely to change the situation any time soon. And we still don’t get even a single free pet to at least introduce the system to the vast majority of Hearthstone players.
