Which Diablo Warlock should you play now that the class is in Diablo Immortal, Diablo 4 and Diablo 2 Resurrected?

The Diablo franchise celebrated its 30th anniversary with rolling out a new canon class — the Warlock — for Diablo 2: Resurrected (released in February 2026), Diablo 4 (released in April 2026), and Diablo Immortal (released in June 2026). With these staggered release dates, we’ve had a chance to absorb each iteration of the class and learn what makes them unique through every launch. But which version of the Warlock is the most fun — and which one should you play? Let’s discuss what you may love (or hate) about the new Warlock class in Diablo 2: Resurrected, Diablo 4, and Diablo Immortal so you can pick your favorite version of this new class.

The Warlock is a significant tonal shift from other summoner classes in the Diablo universe. Instead of a constant, beloved pet army, the Warlock treats its summoned minions as disposable tools, akin to demonic grenades for damage. While the history of their power source — corrupted Vizjerei mages — remains fixed in Diablo lore, the Warlocks we experience have pretty significant personality shifts in their roughly 70-ish in-game years, from roughly 1265 in D2R, to 1270 in DI, and 1336 onward in D4.

Here’s a look at the different Warlocks you’ll find in Diablo games.

Diablo 2: Resurrected features a Warlock who “wields forbidden arts, bridles hellfire and shadow, and dominates demons.” Their three specializations — demonic binding, eldritch weapons, and arts of chaos — show their studious mage roots, but their ability to consume enslaved demons in addition to binding them highlights the corruption within. Instead of persisting demons, Warlocks can passively levitate a weapon in their right hand, enabling unique play with equipping a two-handed weapon and wielding an off-hand at the same time. The D2R Warlock is a cautious, reserved observer of Sanctuary around them, leveraging elevated status and lifestyle to hunt lost knowledge for magic experimentation.

The Warlock in Diablo 4 represents mastery over the powers of the Burning Hells, and as a “conduit of infernal wrath, you bind demons to your will and harness the raw power of Hell to obliterate your enemies.” Their class mechanic, Soul Shards, represent their mastery over named demons, forming a link between the Warlock’s soul and a specific demon’s to grant not only a powerful summons, but bonuses to one of their major power types. But one of the D4 Warlock’s biggest distinguishers is its Demonform, with the Warlock shapeshifting directly into a humanoid-Demonic hybrid that increases their maximum life and damage output of Demonology skills (empowered by Abodian’s Vanguard Shard).

The final version of the Warlock, added in Diablo Immortal patch 5.0.0, is a reckless daredevil that “compromises nearly everything about themselves.” Immortal’s Senior Narrative Designer Ryan Quinn noted in interview that these Warlocks are “a little bit more unhinged; they’ve got the demented tone really cranked up.” This vibe is reflected in everything about the DI Warlock, from their voice lines to the demon skull they tote around on a chain. Instead of absorbing demonic power or embracing it by shifting, they wield their demons through portal-powered summons. The Warlock passive ability’s Soulgorger accompanies them from level 1, slamming enemies into stunned state, sacrificing some of their life for the player when needed, and even devouring your other summons for a power boost.

All three of the Warlocks offer a fun new experience in their game, and the class is Worth trying in all of its forms if you haven’t played a Diablo Warlock yet. There are a few skills that straddle two or more of the titles, such as Tyrant’s Grasp (Diablo 4 and Immortal) and Apocalypse (Diablo 4 and Diablo 2: Resurrected), but at the end of the day, you are tapping the Burning Hells directly as your power source. These classes feel similar by means of their shared origins, but they have different playstyles that may make you enjoy one more than another.
