Dungeons & Dragons reveals dragon’s hoard of details for upcoming releases, including Greyhawk and Dark Sun

Last week’s Gen Con was a focal point for Dungeons & Dragons, as the previously thin calendar of upcoming releases was filled out with familiar names, old haunts, surprising horrors, and iconic villains. Dungeons & Dragons releases have followed a pattern of “seasons” for the last few installments, with new adventures and content tied to a range of dates on the calendar to help players find games in their area or at their local bookstore. The ongoing Season of Horror revolves around Ravenloft: The Horrors Within, and the Season of Magic kicks off in September with Arcana Unleashed.

The D&D Vision Keynote at this year’s Gen Con unveiled the next four seasons, taking us through the end of 2027, along with the flagship titles for each. Read on to explore the rest of the 2026-27 Dungeons & Dragons release schedule.

World of Warcraft and Dark Sun

Perhaps the most talked-about news of the event was the confirmation that D&D is headed to Azeroth. After several popular crossovers with franchises like Stranger Things, the D&D Universes Beyond initiative officially kicks off with the November 17 release of D&D: World of Warcraft.

As the centerpiece of the Season of Champions, you’ll be able to bring your own champion to the tabletop with a full gameplay expansion that includes every WoW class, tons of new species, spells, monsters, dungeons, factions, and even mounts and companion pets. While the Lich King was (as usual) front and center in the promotional materials, it really does sound like all of Azeroth is fair game for exploring at the gaming table.

Early in 2027 things will get a little but more mature with the transition to the Season of Survival. We’re headed back to the dying desert planet of Athas in a revival of the Dark Sun setting. With the most common words used to describe this world being “brutal” and “horrid,” the first mature-rated content for D&D 5e might not appeal broadly to the player base and instead will be most welcomed by players who enjoy situations that aren’t watered down to a PG-13 level.

The two books dropping as part of this setting will be Dark Sun: Blood and Power, a gameplay expansion, and Dark Sun: Edge of Oblivion, an adventure expansion. There will also be a map pack, Dungeon Master screen, and an alternate Player’s Handbook featuring Dark Sun-themed art.

Greyhawk and Star Wars

The horror fades by the fall of 2027 as the Season of Sword and Sorcery begins. This will also involve a return to an old favorite setting with some brand-new Greyhawk content. It’s the first in a series of collaborations known as D&D Icons, a program which brings legends of the tabletop RPG world together with the current Dungeons & Dragons team to produce new adventures in familiar worlds.

We don’t know much about Greyhawk: Crown of the Witch Queen beyond its setting on the world of Oerth. It will follow Drelnza, daughter of the famous witch Tasha, in her attempts to succeed the familial line and become the newest Witch Queen. The icon in this case is Luke Gygax, who will use his father Gary’s original Greyhawk notes to mold the adventure to be true to its 50-year legacy.

The roadmap, as is typical, fades in details as you move further into the future, but we did get a confirmation of what is to come at the end of 2027: the Season of Rebellion. In the second installment of the Universes Beyond series we’ll be headed to a galaxy far, far away with the announcement of Dungeons & Dragons: Star Wars. That announcement consisted solely of lightsaber noises and Darth Vader’s distinct, heavy breathing, so all you scruffy nerf-herders will have to wait for more details on how this crossover will work.
