Sombra is a Support now, apparently?

During the BlizzCon opening ceremony, the Overwatch developers alluded to upcoming revamps to Heroes, including Sombra, who will be a Support now, apparently?

Usually, you expect a rework to be like, this alt fire has a 5 second cooldown instead of a 7 second cooldown. Sometimes things get alerted more drastically, abilities being taken away. A few times we’ve seen major reworks, like with Symmetra’s old turret-based Car Wash, or Bastion’s whole shielding and turret mode thing. But Sombra is going from being a stealthy menace whose core function is shredding your Support backline, to being a Support herself, which just seems wrong.

The devs discussed this transition at length during the Overwatch hero deep dive developer panel. Sombra will no longer have her iconic Hack or stealthing abilities. You can still Hack healthpacks, but you won’t be able to Hack that annoying Pharah right out of the sky. Instead, Sombra will now have a Hotfix ability, which will apply a heal over time (get it, HoT?). This ability will have two charges she can use to heal her allies. Instead of Virus, she’ll have a zone denial ability called Cyberspace, which damages her opponents and heals her allies. Her EMP will remain the same, and you can apply a Perk to use it to Hotfix all your nearby allies.

It sounds like a fine moveset for a Support Hero. I just don’t know, though — it seems so weird for Sombra. She’s cocky, but she earns it by knowing where everyone and everything is on the battlefield at the same time. If she’s playing her best, nobody on her team will even realize she’s there. She uses her allies as bait, she’s constantly talking trash, and above all else she will nurse a grudge until the day she dies.

On second thought, maybe Sombra’s secretly been a Support all along.

These Sombra changes aren’t the only hero updates coming to Overwatch next season. Roadhog will also be getting a rework (though not as drastic), and we’re getting brand new hero Doctrine. Season 5 starts on October 6, so you’ll be able to play new Sombra soon. (Or, alternatively spend the next few weeks cherishing current Sombra.)
