The Queue: The return of Mal’Ganis

Welcome back to The Queue, our daily Q&A feature for all of Blizzard’s games! Have a question for the Blizzard Watch staff? Leave it in the comments!

Today we’ve got some Legion questions, including one regarding potential big Burning Legion names we’ll be seeing, and suddenly I’m reminded that we haven’t seen Mal’Ganis in a very long time. I’m also reminded that I really, really liked his voice work in Wrath, and I’d really love to hear those dulcet booming tones delivering a death knell upon us all again. I mean, it’s about time, right?

PATRICKHAMILTONPRENTISS ASKED:

Q4tQ: I know that we can only speculate, but do you think that Demon Hunters will get Draenor Perks? Thank you very much!

I imagine they will while they’re leveling through Draenor. I’m curious if we’re going to be keeping our perks after we leave Draenor, however. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that addressed one way or another.

RAHKARNE ASKED:

As we all know, Heroes of the Storm has a lot of universes to pull from. Do you think retro Blizzard games should have more representatation? I know a lot of us would love it, but is there enough awareness in the general playerbase to make it a valid option? I realize the Lost Vikings are classic, but I feel like they are on the better known side of classic Blizzard.

Kyle from Blackthorne seems like such a natural fit that it’s almost a no brainer.

A map based on Rock n’ Roll Racing would be great as well. The race annoucer and perhaps armed cars attacking the enemy base as the map’s gimmick. I could even see a car itself being a character due to how weaponized they were (hey; it worked for Sgt Hammer).

Plausible or just the dreams of an old crusty bugger who grew up in the 80’s and 90’s?

Dude you have no idea how much I want to see Kyle in Heroes of the Storm. I have no idea why they haven’t brought him in yet. I mean yeah, I don’t think Blackthorne was quite as well known as Lost Vikings, but still he should totally have a place. Sarlac too, because why not? And a Rock n’ Roll Racing map would be fantastic. I mean if they’re going to throw everything and the kitchen sink into Heroes, might as well just go all out, right?

RAYNSTORMM ASKED:

Who knows when Legion will come out… I was thinking of leveling two characters through the old world. One Horde, one Alliance. But level them together, and do the same zone on each character before progressing to the next, to see both sides of the story. What races and classes should I do?

Worgen and Forsaken. The two starting areas play off of each other as of Cataclysm, and you get the full story from doing both. It’s a really good story! Make at least one of them a rogue, and try to get the pieces for the rogue legendary quest from Cata content when you can, because you end up going back to Gilneas again and seeing more story. Keep in mind you’re going to have a split at some point no matter what you roll, because the early zones are faction-specific, but once you get them to an appropriate level, I’d recommend doing South Barrens, because that’s another series of quests that tell the same story two ways, and it’s a good one. Heartbreaking, but a good one.

GLOOMYASTRONOMER ASKED:

Whoa whoa whoa, wait. Blizzard completely removed the ability to get the legendary cape? Why?

Yes, they did, at the end of Mists of Pandaria. The cloak was a powerful item that was only meant to be relevant to that particular expansion, and they wanted the legendary to continue to feel legendary after the expansion was over. There were a few interesting things they pulled in Mists of Pandaria that were along the same lines — the Vale of Eternal Blossoms used to be a giant daily quest hub, but it was permanently destroyed when Garrosh wrecked the Vale in 5.4. I don’t really mind so much, just because the permanent impact of a lot of things that occurred during the expansion felt like it gave the story more weight — at least to me, anyway.

@ATANAE ASKED VIA TWITTER:

Do you feel that Legion will explore the origins of the Night Elves, and what is your pet theory as to their origins?

I don’t know if it’ll explore the origins, but I expect we might see more exploration into the days of the War of the Ancients. Their origins were already disclosed in an issue of the old Warcraft magazine, anyway. They were Dark Trolls, they found the Well, things happened and suddenly they were Night Elves. Whether or not the Night Elves would deign acknowledge that the Trolls came first, or that they were descendants of the Trolls is another thing altogether, but I don’t really expect anyone is going to have time to ponder that, what with the world on fire and the Burning Legion threatening to destroy life as we know it and all.

BINNOTHESHAMAN ASKED:

QftQ: Given that we took out some of the Legion’s top dogs in the Hellfire Citadel raid, who do you think will be heading up the Legion invasion of Azeroth? The villains presented on the Legion site (such as Xavius, Gul’dan, and potentially Illidan) seem to be working alongside the Legion/doing as it commands rather than leading its armies. I’m curious as to which Legion leaders might act as the field commanders during the Azeroth invasion, carrying out roles similar to Mannoroth and Archimonde (who, as far as I know, were both killed in the Hellfire Citadel raid) during the War of the Ancients. Do you think that Kil’jaeden might take up Archimonde’s conquering role? Do you think we’ll see another avatar of Sargeras? Or do you think Mannoroth and/or Archimonde will make a return?

It’s a good question, and I don’t quite have an answer for you, but I have some names I’d like to see! You’d think maybe we’ll see Kil’jaeden, but we already faced him at the Sunwell, or maybe we’d see Archimonde, but we’ve already faced him twice over. But those are the two big lieutenants for the Burning Legion, so the only other option is some other, new demon of high rank that will come in and take over, or yes, another avatar of Sargeras. Or maybe even Gul’dan himself — maybe the task has fallen to him, since Archimonde failed.

But to be perfectly honest, I kind of want to see Mal’Ganis make a return. We saw him briefly during Wrath of the Lich King, and he escaped. I’d like to see him come back again. Maybe even with Tichondrius or even Mephistroth. Or heck, bring back Varimathras, because that would definitely give Sylvanas a keen, vested interest in what’s going on. Throw in Balnazzar and Detheroc, too.
