Breakfast Topic: A companion system

class fantasy

Between Garrison Followers, especially the bodyguards you can give yourself, and the coming system in Legion that expands upon it, I find myself wondering why World of Warcraft hasn’t embraced Diablo 3’s system and let you have permanent companions. I’ll admit I’m also thinking about Star Wars: The Old Republic and Fallout 4 here, where you get a team of people you can select to accompany you on your adventures through the galaxy/wasteland. Should WoW steal these systems?

My thing is this — I don’t think WoW needs this from a gameplay perspective. Questing, dungeons, raids — none of these things need you to have someone tagging along and helping. Especially for dungeons and raids I don’t want to see that. But where I do think it would be awesome would be to add a level of narrative in terms of new quests you can accept on behalf of or from your companions, helping them deal with their issues, even getting closer to them as friends and allies. It’s one of the best things about single player RPG’s and I’d like to see WoW try and branch its questing out a bit.

Your thoughts? Great idea, terrible idea, or great and terrible idea?
