Breakfast Topic: Trailers vs. movies

It almost seems to me like trailers do more harm than good sometimes. The discussion I’ve seen of the Warcraft trailer has been… spirited, let’s call it. Even Warcraft director Duncan Jones has weighed in. My question is, are we watching trailers made for people who’ve never heard of Warcraft before with the eyes of people who’ve been living in it for years?

And does that matter?

I’ll admit I don’t feel particularly excited by the trailers. But this is a problem I have with most movie trailers. Lately it feels like almost all movie trailers are the same — sweeping shots, stirring music, quips, it’s all set to a soundtrack that could be in six different movie trailers.

Watching the Warcraft trailers, they don’t bother me. I’m not put off by them, but I do note their sameness to every other movie trailer out there right now. And that does bother me. But perhaps I’m not the audience for them? I mean, I’m going. I’m a confirmed ticket sale. They don’t have to market to me.

What are your thoughts on the subject? Love trailers, hate trailers, haven’t even noticed them? And will you go see Warcraft this June?
