Why do you play the games you play?

I play Diablo 3 to explode armies of monsters and spend time with my wife… exploding armies of monsters. I play World of Warcraft to play dress up with my characters and also hang out with my friends. I play Heroes of the Storm to let people down — or at least that seems to be the result of my playing that game. I don’t play Overwatch because the whole “only one working eye” thing means I get mega motion sickness playing it. But I do love Overwatch a lot, in a “The lore is great and I love watching videos of people playing” sort of way.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot as I realize that my playing dress up and chatting with friends has long since eclipsed all the reasons I played World of Warcraft when I started. I used to be all about getting good gear and killing monsters and completing raids — but nowadays? Nowadays, I’m much more about looking pretty, and I don’t even really care what people think about it. If I want a gameplay challenge, I’ll push Greater Rifts in Diablo 3, because I can do that alone or with another player. Incidentally, this is also why I’m looking forward to Torgast in Shadowlands, because I’m hoping it will be like running GRs with my wife in Diablo 3.

So what’s your poison, so to speak? Why do you play the games you play, and what ways in particular do you most enjoy playing them? Are you running Alterac Valley in WoW Classic, or are you more the competitive PVP type in WoW? Are you and your friends lighting up other teams in Overwatch, or do you prefer to explore single player in Hearthstone? What are you playing, and why are you playing it?
