How should gigantic bosses be represented during their in-game fights?

When it comes to bosses in World of Warcraft, it’s hard to get the feel of the rather ginormous ones down very well. For instance, Deathwing was one of those giant bosses that Blizzard really wanted players to get a sense of scale for when fighting. The result was that Deathwing had two full fights dedicated to defeating him, with the first taking place entirely on his back and the second taking place on the different platforms of the Maelstrom that allowed you to attack his various appendages. While it was cool in concept, splitting the fight up this way never really gave players the feeling that they were fighting Deathwing himself.

Since then, we’ve never really had a giant boss split up that way — but we’ve also never really had a boss that’s canonically giant appear giant in their fight. Instead of fighting Sargeras, we fought the Avatar of Sargeras. Any time we’ve seen the Pantheon, it’s always been shrunk-down versions that are basically just more avatars. And now, with N’Zoth, we end up fighting what is basically just a super small version of what he would normally look like. It’s not an avatar exactly; it’s just a small version of the Old God.

I know it’s not the first Old God we’ve fought, but N’Zoth sticks out to me because several aspects of patch 8.3 show just how huge he is. We see his giant tentacles in the lesser Visions. We see his entire body looming over us in the penultimate fight of Ny’alotha. We’ve seen the size of the chains required to keep him in place up until we accidentally freed him. And then we fight him and he’s just the size of any other boss.

The thing is, I don’t really know how Blizzard could change things up to make it feel more like we were fighting his full-sized self without also suffering the same drawbacks that Deathwing’s fights had. And that’s why I’m asking you all today what you think would be the solution. Are you fine with giant bosses appearing normal size like N’Zoth does in Ny’alotha? Would you rather they appear as large as they are in canon? If so, how would you do it? Sound off below!
