The Queue: Tuesday Party edition

It’s RC’s birthday, and that’s more than enough excuse for a party. After the past few weeks I kinda feel like we need it.

This is The Queue, where you give us questions, and then when we open them there’s just a smaller question and a smaller question until we finally give up on giving a concise answer and it’s mostly cleanup.

Q4tQ: If Blizz added a free-to-play option to WoW, would you support a sub option that always kept you in a separate shard from the f2p players? Instanced content would still be shared among all players, it’d just be open world that would be segregated.

Nope.

Though that would certainly help trade chat, a big reason why F2P games tend to suck is the low barrier for entry means people tend to bot as a way of life. Even if they’re not directly in my face during World Quests, they’re still going to completely wreck the economy with cheap fish and ill-gotten herbs.

Now, I’m not actually opposed to F2P, or some kind of system where I sub and get the usual cosmetics as a perk — pets, transmogs, mounts, whatever. Gating things off mid-game wouldn’t really solve any existing problems, and would definitely create extra issues down the road to boot. It’s an interesting thought, but I feel like there are better solutions.

Q4tQ: Which zone do you want to see a different version of which we never got to see in-game? I’d be interested in seeing how the Dread Wastes looked before it got all Sha-y.

I’d really like to see how that bridge is coming along in Redridge. It’s been almost another decade. If it’s not done by now give it up and hire some dwarves or something.

Also, I still have my fingers crossed that one of these days we’ll finally get to see Tel’Abim. Just lousy with bananas, from what I understand.

Q4TQ: Do you remember when Anna was a family friendly content creator?

Fun fact: I stopped doing this when I realized that the Family Friendly tag on Twitch was used by bored 13 year olds to troll. Since tags are one of the few ways you can bump your discovery on Twitch, and that was the only traffic I ever got from it, it absolutely wasn’t worth it to waste one like that. Plus, doing so gave me a lot more leeway in the games I can play.

I went from Stardew Valley to games with themes that weren’t just more mature from like, a slinging f-bombs perspective or even things that are gory perspective. What Remains of Edith Finch isn’t gross or smoochy, but it’s definitely not for kids just because its story isn’t going to feel as harrowing, and they may not understand the symbolism attached to each character. Night In The Woods has its share of f-bombs, and of course being gay and doing crimes is encouraged for any age bracket, but beyond the bizarrely prescient ending the characters are all grappling with some issues that likely don’t ring true to younger kids. That’s before introducing concepts like an unreliable narrator, too.

Of course now I’m mostly playing WoW again, but hey, at least I can have a beer while I do it.

When do we normally get Steam sales?

I’m kinda wanting to get the Sam and Max games again. I’ve bought them before, but that was before Telltale went bust and apparently came back, but I doubt I can re-download the old versions.

Initially there was just the Summer Sale, and then there was the Winter Sale, and now there are just sales freaking constantly, it seems.  The next sale should be Summer, but there may be a Spring Sale sometime in May.

Sometimes a particular publisher will run sales on their own stuff based on anniversary dates or just for the heck of it, so if you’re sticking with Steam, the best way to find a good sale is to just Wishlist and wait. I get an email when something pops on sale, or if I have cash burning a hole in my pocket I can just filter by ‘on sale’ and see what I can snag for cheap. You’ll also start noticing patterns. Bioshock Infinite is always 75% off these days so if it’s not, I should definitely wait until it is to buy it. If there’s a specific more modern title you’re very interested in, following the devs on Twitter can give you the tip off for deals too — Brukel is 60% off in celebration of a big win at the Belgium Game Awards (though I’m not sure I can bring myself to play it, emotionally).

Of course, I currently have 142 titles on my Wishlist, so your mileage may vary. And that’s before I start looking through all the stuff I’ve picked up with the monthly Twitch Prime or weekly Epic freebies.
