Tormenters of Torghast Maw invasions are coming in patch 9.1
One of the upcoming events in patch 9.1 is the Tormentors of Torghast — reminiscent of the older Legion invasions — where the forces of the Maw under the command of Kel’Thuzad strike back at the Covenants as they invade the Maw in force and seek to wrest control of Korthia from the Jailer. We also know that completing these events allows you to collect items that lead to the Hand of Bahmethra mount, and that there’s a quest involving the Tormentors but currently on the PTR that quest is marked as completed.
So what, exactly, are the Tormentors of Torghast? What rewards do they give, and how can we get the Hand of Bahmethra mount by completing them?
The Tormentors Themselves
Thanks to the Achievement Minions of the Cold Dark, we know the names of the various Tormentors — powerful rares that spawn in the Maw itself and assault areas of importance for the Covenants as they wage war against the Jailer’s forces. They are as follows:
- Versya the Damned
- Promathiz
- Gruukuuek the Elder
- Mugrem the Soul Devourer
- Algel the Haunter
- Kazj the Sentinel
- Malleus Grakizz
- Golmak the Monstrosity
- Gralebboih
- Sentinel Pyrophus
- Zul’gath the Flayer
- The Mass of Souls
- Sentingel Shakorzeth
- Intercessor Razzram
- Manifestation of Pain
We also know thanks to the Shaping Fate weekly quest that you’ll need to kill nine Tormentors a week as part of the rep grind with the Death’s Advance, which means the Tormentors sound like a combination of the older Legion Assaults from Legion and the rare spawns we saw during the Shadowlands pre-expansion event at Icecrown Glacier. We also know that the Tormentors have a chance to drop a Link of Bahmeht inside the Tormentor’s Cache that you get for killing the Tormentor. After you collect 200 of the Links you can forge the Chain of Bahmethra, which summons the Hand of Bahmethra mount, so if you want to get your hands on a big hand to ride around on — I’m not kidding, it’s literally a giant hand, as in it belonged to a long dead giant that Zovaal punished in the distant past — you’ll be farming a lot of these Tormentors.
How does this event work?
Well, according to Blizzard’s preview for patch 9.1, the Tormentors of Torghast events are Kel’Thuzad’s attempt to stop the Covenants as they assault the Maw and Korthia, trying to push them back with waves of Mawsworn. If you, the player, kill enough Mawsworn minions — and we’re still not sure exactly how, if there’s a progress bar that fills slowly as the players in the Maw kill Mawsworn or if there will be various quests like in Legion — then the Tormentors themselves will spawn in and try and ruin anyone who opposes the Jailer. If you manage to kill those guys, they drop Tormentor’s Caches. In addition to dropping Links of Bahmeht, Tormentor’s Caches will also drop Soul Cinders for upgrading your Legendary items to ranks 5 and 6, as well as possibly dropping “powerful equipment” for players — perhaps similar to previous expansions that had special gear drop from bosses.
Sadly, that’s all we currently know about the Tormentors of Torghast. Hopefully we’ll get more details soon, like how often these events happen, how hard it’s going to be to kill nine of these guys a week, how often they drop gear and Links of Bahmeht, and so on. Until then, we’ll be pondering exactly how to make the worst “hands on” pun with the Hand of Bahmethra mount. I’d recommend staying tuned, because you won’t want to miss this one.
