The Queue: Believe everything you read today, except this title
Surprise! After a small discussion in the comments about who was or was not writing today, I decided to throw everything for a loop and take over today’s Queue! Also Liz needed someone’s help and I couldn’t sleep.
So yes, I’m writing The Queue on April 1. Don’t worry, though, I’ve saved my April Fool’s joke for another article.
Until then, we Queue.
Why is tomorrow today… oh right. It’s my birthday. I forgot that part.
HAPPY BIRTHDAYYYY!!!! I admit, my first thought was, “Wait, really?” and then I read your comment about having to convince people every year and I felt bad.
So please enjoy this shout-out and have a fantastic birthday! Treat yo self.
Currently doing “Chasing the Chicken,” because I’d rather be in Pandaria, and I thought of a question: what was the last quest that made you smile unconsciously?
Okay well it’s not a quest, but I love the googly eyes that Overwatch adds to everything. They actually were added into the game in between matches last night, and as soon as my girlfriend pointed out the googly eyes, I smiled and laughed.
I can’t actually remember the last quest that really made me do that, but I’m sure if y’all list some, we’ll have overlap.
Q4tQ: Do you prefer your Dragons possessing humanoid speech?
I think I’m more at the “I accept this as the creative choice” when it comes to giant, talking dragons. I prefer it if big ol’ dragons roar and such, but I get why having them just able to speak humanoid happens a lot. I think WoW’s method of humanoid form/dragon form works well (though even then, the dragon-dragons still talk).
I dunno, I guess there’s something that sometimes takes me out of the moment when I see a big dragon just talk casually. It doesn’t kill a game or anything, but it’s a split second of unexpectedness.
Q4tQ: Hey Mitch, have you played the latest Kirby game already? What are your thoughts about it?
I have! I actually made sure to play it right at midnight last week when it came out. And while I haven’t HARDCORE GAMER’d my way through it yet, I’m on the third area (I think) with the carnival setting.
I’m really enjoying it so far, and Mouthful Mode is never not hilarious. I think the only thing I really wish the game had is the ability to combine powers like you could back in Crystal Shards. For some reason, I had it in my head that this game was going to have that feature and, well, it doesn’t. The evolution system is kind of neat, but I still really loved the random combinations you could get in Crystal Shards when you put two powers togther.
The only other thing I’ll really add is that a lot of people kept saying “Kirby Odyssey!” at all the previews, but it’s definitely more like Kirby 3D World.
What do you call it when you love a game when you are wining and absolutely hate it when you lose? Is there a word for that?
When I win in Heroes it’s a super fun game, but when I lose I want to rage quit and put my fist through the wall. How does that work as a game design?
Um… a love/hate relationship! I don’t know about a word specifically associated with winning or losing, though. But I do think it’s important for a game’s losses to still feel fun more often than not.
QftQ: With the Epilogue not including any mention of the Dragon Isles, Dragons, or Ysera even showing up, do you think that has any bearing on the chances of the Dragon Isles being the next expansion?
For myself, I fam growing more and more doubtful. While I can still see the argument for it, I don’t think it’s anywhere close to the sure bet the way many in the community are treating it.
Without talking about the epilogue’s content itself too much, I don’t think it has any bearing on the next expansion.
Blizzard has a habit of “out of left field” expansion announcements, imo. Sure, some of them have been predictable or at least foreshadowed, but there’s plenty of reason to believe Blizzard will find a reason for us to go to the Dragon Isles and make it work. (Plus, we have 9.2.5 still to come, and I’m sure at least one of those random things from BFA Island Expeditions was hinting at Dragon Isles.)
Bottom line, I usually expect Blizzard to surprise me with an expansion, either in the sense that I never saw it coming or the sense that I did not see the connection in place ahead of time.
Q4tQ: In regards to the last Sylvanas animated scenes, I really liked how they used the in game assets to create them. It feels like you’re not being removed from the WoW world with a high budget CGI cinematic.
I also really like liked the longer length and player interaction. I would much rather have more of those mixed with quests than a short one and done movie cinematic. Note, this is from watching youtube videos of other people playing through them.
Which do you enjoy more and why?
I admit, the in-game cutscenes with your character could be fun, but for a lot of BFA, the movements felt too stiff for me and I felt like they were overused a bit. However, they’ve really upped what they can do with the IGCs, and when they’re at the quality of the epilogue cinematic, they take me out a lot less.
…That said, I’m a sucker for pretty visuals, and I still usually prefer the pre-rendered ones.
That’s all for today! I hope everyone has a lovely weekend and any jokes you encounter today be ones that make you smile. Cheers!
